Holbrook wins consolation bracket at Winslow Winter Classic tourney

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Valley Sanders Lady Pirates for the championship at the Winslow Winter Classic tournament Dec. 22. Window Rock defeated Chinle for third place and Holbrook won the consolation bracket championship over Tuba City.

In consolation bracket play of the Winslow Winter Classic Dec. 21, the Tuba City Lady Warriors defeated the Hopi Lady Bruins 51-24 and the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners defeated the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 55-52. Both advanced to the next round.

On Dec. 22, the Tuba City Lady Warriors defeated the Joseph City Lady Wildcats 61-49 to advance to the consolation bracket championship game. In the other consolation bracket semi-final, the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners defeated the Snowflake Lady Lobos 51-40.

The Monument Valley Lady Mustangs defeated the Hopi Lady Bruins 61-43 Dec. 22. In that game, Monument Valley led 18-11 after the first period and 30-20 at the half. The margin was 44-34 after three quarters. Monument Valley had four players in double figures with Kristen Smith and Heather Tsichine contributing 13 points each, Christa Shirley scoring 12 points and Desyli Thin knocking in 11 points. Natasha Robertson scored 16 points for Hopi to lead all scorers. Lauren Tallas scored 11 points for Hopi.

The Holbrook Lady Roadrunners took the consolation bracket championship with a 65-47 win over the Tuba City Lady Warriors. Tuba City led 12-10 after the first period but Holbrook scored 28 points in the second quarter. Holbrook led 38-27 at the half and was up a commanding 56-33 after three quarters of play.

Ashley Lomaveya of Tuba City led all scorers with 14 points. Holbrook had three players in double figures with Starla Smith scoring 13, Teyah Goldtooth scoring 12 and Col'bi Nez scoring 10 points.

The Window Rock Lady Scouts won the third place game of the championship bracket with a 48-43 win over the Chinle Lady Wildcats.

Window Rock led 13-11 after the first quarter and 30-21 at the half. Chinle came back to take a 38-34 lead after three quarters. Window Rock outscored the Lady Wildcats 14-5 in the final period to seal the win.

Kristen Begay of Chinle led all scorers with 15 points. Aspen Shepherd scored 11 points and Arianne Sheka scored 10 points for Window Rock.
