Shonto Preparatory School announces Summer Food Service

The Shonto Preparatory School will provide summer meal service to all children 18 and younger, without charge. The meal service is the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. The school will provide meals at Shonto Preparatory School, East Highway 160 and 98 starting on June 3-27, Monday through Thursday. Breakfast service is 7-8 a.m. Lunch service is 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Tuba City Regional Health Care corporation cafeteria closed first Thursday of month

Natural Grocers will donate five cents per customer to Northern Arizona Food Bank for each person that shops with their own bag.

N-NURSE hosting sixth symposium April Thursday and Friday in Flagstaff

Navajoland Nurses United for Research, Service and Education, Inc. (N-NURSE) will host its sixth symposium, "Hózhó Náhásdlii: Sacred Space and Human Caring in Health Care," Thursday and Friday at Little America Hotel in Flagstaff, Ariz. Organizers are seeking sponsors for the event.

N-NURSE invites speakers and workshop facilitators with expertise appropriate to the focus of the symposium. American Indian nursing students participate in the symposium through the group's American Indian Nursing Student Scholarship Program. The symposium provides an opportunity for nursing students to network, expand their knowledge of nursing as a career and build leadership skills.

Dr. Jean Watson is returning as this year's keynote speaker. She will discuss the cultural wisdom inherent in the concepts of her 'Caritas' theory and Hózhó náhásdlii, Navajo philosophy, to integrate human caring in health care environments.

Classes offered for parents on student success

Kate Esquirvel teaches parenting classes, "How to Help Your Child Succeed in School," at Leupp Public School in Leupp. Classes take place from 9-9:30 a.m. every first and third Thursday of the month through May.

Classes will be offered April 18, May 2 and 16.

Birth certificates available

Birth certificates will be available through the Coconino County Public Health Services District. Their staff now travels to Tuba City, Page, and Leupp to offer the service outside of their regular Flagstaff office hours.

Staff visits Tuba City 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (local time) the first and third Wednesday of the month at the Coconino County District 5 Supervisors Office, 49 Maple St., one street west of Tuba City Regional Health Care Center. A Navajo translator is available.

Staff visits Page every second Wednesday of the month 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (MST) at the Coconino County Health Department, Northern Region Office, 467 Vista Ave.

Staff visits Leupp Chapter house the first Thursday of the month 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (local time).

Kite festival May 11

Flagstaff Recreation Services will put on the 11th Annual Soar into Spring Kite Festival May 11 from noon to 4 p.m. at Foxglenn Park (4200 East Butler Ave.) Entry is free.

Voted Arizona Parks and Recreation's Most Outstanding Community Event, the day includes kite flying, arts and crafts with Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society, carnival games, bounce houses, carnival food, face painting and the Flagstaff Library Activities and Kiddie Kaboose Train. Honoring Our Warriors gourd dance May 18

The fourth annual "Honoring Our Warriors" gourd dance takes place May 18 at the Curley residence at Navajo Tribal Route 6830 in Birdsprings, Ariz.

Gourd dancing runs from 11 a.m. (MST) to sunset. Dinner will be provided. All singers, drummers and dancers are welcome.

This is a free event. Attendees are encouraged to bring canopies and chairs. Vendors will be charged $25 per space. This is a drug and alcohol free event.

The Curley residence is two miles east of Little Singer School. From Tribal Route 15, exit south at Mile Post 33, and go five miles on Route 6830.

Navajo Nation Special Diabetes Project central administration office relocation

The Navajo Nation Special Diabetes Project (NNSDP) central administration office has relocated to the log cabin behind the Inn of Navajoland in St. Michael, Ariz. because of the closure of Administration Building 2 in Window Rock, Ariz.

"We are not sure exactly how long we will be located here in this facility," said Betti Delrow, NNSDP acting program manager. "We will carry out our business and the services being provided to the Navajo Nation in preventing diabetes and providing education about diabetes will continue without interruption."

NNSDP is currently waiting for phone service and Internet to be installed at the new offices. Until then, phone messages may be left at the Window Rock Wellness Center at (928) 871-7870.

Singing competition May 1 and May 8

Northern Arizona's Got Talent preliminaries take place May 1 and 8 at the Coconino Center for the Arts, 2300 N. Fort Valley Rd.

Northern Arizona's Got Talent is a singing competition like American Idol. Contestants will compete in three age categories (12 and under, 13-18 and 19 plus). This is a free event and open to anyone regardless of singing experience.

During the preliminaries all contestants will perform in front of judges a cappella. Winners from the preliminaries will move on to the semi-finals May 22. Semi-finalists winners move on to the finals May 29 at the Orpheum Theater.

Registration is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with competition beginning at 7 p.m. All entrants in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to sing. Organizers will not take registrations after the competition begins. Registration is only available on the day of the events.

Spring Arts Fair April 20-21

The Spring Arts Fair at the Hopi Arts and Crafts Building on Second Mesa, Ariz. next to the Hopi Cultural Center, (approximately 100 yards to the west of the center) takes place April 20-21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arts and Crafts vendor booths are $25 per person, food and snack vendor booths are $35 per person, walk around vendor permits (raffle, small arts and pinon, etc.) are $15 per person. Fitness center open in Kayenta

The Kayenta Fitness Center is a 1,500 square-foot fitness center located on U.S. Route 163, next to the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) in Kayenta.

The recently opened fitness center includes a treadmill and elliptical trainer for aerobic workouts, as well as various weight machines and free weights for strength conditioning. A monthly membership is $15 and a one-time all-day pass is $1.

The center is open Monday through Saturday. Its hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. It is closed on Sundays.

The Kayenta Fitness Center is a component of the Kayenta Township's Capital Improvement Projects and the Kayenta Township, whose overall vision is to achieve community development and to implement economic growth.
