Farmers market open to all

St. Jude Food Bank in Tuba City is opening a farmers' market. The market will be open every Wednesday 5:30-7:30 p.m. through Oct. 10.

Local farmers are encouraged to sell crops at the market. There will also be cooking demonstrations, health screenings and several informational booths at the market as well. The event is sponsored by Johns Hopkins Institute. For more information, call (928) 283-6886.

Classes offered for parents on student success

Parenting classes, "How to Help Your Child Succeed in School," will be led by Kate Esquirvel at Leupp Public School in Leupp. Classes will be held 9-9:30 a.m. every first and third Thursday of the month through May.

Classes will be held tomorrow Oct. 18, Nov. 1 and 15, Dec. 6 and 20, Jan. 17, Feb. 7 and 21, March 7, April 4 and 18 and May 2 and 16.

Flagstaff Justice Court coming to Tuba City

Flagstaff Justice Court will hold open court hearings in Tuba City on Sept. 27 at Moenkopi Legacy Inn. Pre-Registration is required. Who should register? Those with an open criminal or traffic case with the Coconino County Flagstaff Justice Court, including cases with outstanding warrants. You will not be arrested in court. Legislative summit in Tuba City Sept. 28

A 2012 Arizona Legislative Summit in Tuba City on Sept. 28. The summit is hosted by County Supervisor Lena Fowler. Come and hear updates from your state elected officials and learn about legislation impacting the Navajo Nation. The event is free. Pre-registration is encouraged. Upcoming events at Tuba City Boarding School

The Office of Youth Development at Tuba City Boarding School (TCBS) are pleased to announce several upcoming events.

The Fall Youth Basketball League will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays Oct. 2-Nov. 29. The league will meet 5:30-8 p.m. in the TCBS gym. The league is for youth ages 6-7 and 8-10.

The Mini Miss Western Navajo Pageant will be held 6-10 p.m. Oct. 16 in the TCBS gym. The pageant is for young ladies 6-9-years-old. The Lil' Western Navajo Pageant will be held 6-10 p.m. Oct. 16 in the TCBS gym. Contestants must be 10-12-years-old. Eligibility criteria includes the following: must be an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation with a census no; must have knowledge of tribal culture and traditions; and must be enrolled and attending school in Western Navajo Agency.

Co-ed hoop tournament in Holbrook Oct. 20-21

Teams must register before 4 p.m. on Oct. 5, for the third annual coed basketball tournament on Oct. 20-21, at the Holbrook High School Gymnasium. Northland Pioneer College's Student Government Association (SGA) is the tournament sponsor.

The entry fee is $50 per team, with the first place team going home with $500 and the second place team winning $250. Each team will consist of five players, with two permanent substitutions allowed.

Games begin at 10 a.m. on both days. Admission is $2 for adults and free for 10 and under.

Flagstaff Community Foundation announces Confluence Fund

The Flagstaff Community Foundation announces and invites participation in the first grant cycle of a new fund dedicated to indigenous cultures and protecting sacred environments of the Colorado Plateau. Temporarily called the Confluence Fund, it will award grants for building organizational capacity in one of four areas: Protecting Sacred Places, Protecting Water, Promoting Community Health, and Maintaining Indigenous Language. Tribes served by the fund include Acoma, Havasupai, Hopi, Hualapai, Kaibab Paiute, Navajo, Ute Mountain Ute, White Mountain Apache, and Zuni.

In the spring of 2012 The Christensen Fund and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation made grants to the Arizona Community Foundation to create a community fund in service to Colorado Plateau tribal communities. Today, the Arizona Community Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of the fund.

The deadline for submitting applications is 4 p.m. on Oct. 5. Proposals may be submitted for any amount between $1,000 and $17,000. Yavapai-Apache Nation hosts Native American Day Friday

The Yavapai-Apache Nation will host its Annual Native American Day Celebration at the Yavapai-Apache Nation Veteran's Memorial Park located below the Cliff Castle Casino Hotel 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday.

The day's events will begin with a 5k run/walk at 7 a.m., followed by traditional Yavapai and Apache games, crafts, a free luncheon, and traditional Yavapai and Apache dances.

Native American Day is a celebration of the rich heritage and contributions of all Native Americans throughout the United States. The Yavapai-Apache Nation invites everyone to join them for this special event.

Contestants wanted for Miss Western Navajo Pageant

The 2012-2013 Miss Western Navajo Pageant is scheduled for Oct. 13 at Monument Valley High School in Monument Valley, Utah.

The pageant will begin at 9 a.m. with contestants' arrival and followed by personal interviews (closed to public). The frybread competition will be at 11 a.m. Lunch will be provided by the outgoing Miss Western Navajo 2011-2012 and family at noon. The talent competitions will begin at 2 p.m.

All interest contestants can pick up an application at the ToNanesDizi Chapter House in Tuba City, Ariz. Application deadline is Sept. 28 at 5 p.m. and a small orientation will be held the same day. For more information contact Ann Marie Salt at (928) 814-4778 or amsalt89@gmail.com.

Country Market continues Saturday at Leppin Ranch

The Leppin Ranch in Winslow extends an invitation to all Navajo and Hopi people to come and enjoy upcoming events.

The Farmers Market continues 12-2 p.m. Saturday and Sept. 29. Park your booth under a tree and sell to the many customers that come to enjoy the ranch. Fees are still $7 prior to Aug. 20. After that date, the fee is $15.

The Annual Fall Harvest Festival will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 6-7 at Leppin Ranch, 102 Papago Blvd., Winslow. Enjoy live pumpkin, melon and vegetable picking in addition to hayrides and food and beverages. Pet and paint Princess the Pony while enjoying entertainment and other exciting events. There is fun for everyone - young and old - so come and enjoy the new store, order ice cream, sandwiches and spend the day.

Birth certificates available

Birth certificates will be available through the Coconino County Public Health Services District. Their staff now travels to Tuba City, Page, and Leupp to offer the service outside of their regular Flagstaff Office hours.

Staff visits Tuba City 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (local time) the first and third Wednesday of the month at the Coconino Country District 5 Supervisors Office, 49 Maple St., one street west of Tuba City Regional Health Care Center. A Navajo translator is available.

Staff visits Page every second Wednesday of the month 10 a.m.-2 p.m. MST at the Coconino County Health Department, Northern Region Office, 467 Vista Ave.

Staff visits Leupp Chapter house the first Thursday of the month 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (local time).
