Winslow clobbers Sedona Red Rock 52-7 in season opener

SEDONA, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs opened their 2012 season with a 52-7 victory over the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions in Sedona on Aug. 24. The Bulldogs thoroughly dominated the Scorpions and had the game decided by the end of the first quarter.

Kelly Wood scored on the second play of the game on a 75-yard run. Jonathan Oso booted the conversion for a 7-0 Winslow lead. Oso scored a touchdown on a one yard run on Winslow's next possession but missed the conversion leaving the Bulldogs with a 13-0 lead.

Sedona's Luis Robles intercepted a Winslow pass and the Scorpions drove 39 yards and scored on a 10 yard run by Franz Kennan. Max Houseman converted to cut the Winslow lead to 13-7.

After that score, the Winslow defense kept Sedona under control.

Kelly Wood ran 80 yards for his second touchdown of the game. A conversion pass failed and Winslow led 19-7.

A snap over the Sedona punter gave Winslow the ball on the Sedona 12-yard line and James Martinez scored from a yard out. The conversion kick was blocked and Winslow led 25-7.

Rod Cleveland picked off a Scorpion pass and ran 30 yards for the final score of the first quarter, which Winslow led 31-7 after the conversion kick was blocked.

Henry Montiel ran 87 yards to score on Winslow's next possession. The conversion kick increased the lead to 38-7.

James Martinez hit Shane Sweet with a 63-yard pass for the next Winslow touchdown. The conversion gave the Bulldogs a 45-7 half time lead.

Jonathan Oso scored on a seven yard run for Winslow's first score of the second half. The conversion increased the lead to 52-7. That was the only score of the second half, which was mostly played with a running clock due to the commanding lead. Winslow played its entire bench most of the second half.

The Bulldogs were to remain on the road on Aug. 31 when they journeyed to Holbrook to meet the Holbrook Roadrunners. Holbrook fell to Snowflake 54-7 in a rout on Aug. 24.
