Hopi Veterans Day celebration Nov. 8-9 at Hopi Veterans Memorial Center

KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - Hopi and Navajo veterans are invited to come and enjoy two-days of honoring activities and formal observance for all military personnel and their families Nov. 8-9 at the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center in Kykotsmovi.

Just like a "joint military operation," the Hopi Veterans offices, under the supervision of Director Geno Talas, is working with organizations including the Miss Hopi Committee, Hopi High School Student Council, Hopi Office of Special Needs, VA Outreach Office at Hotevilla, Arizona Department of Veterans Services, Hopi Telecommunications, Moencopi Developers Corporation, Hopi Credit Association, Greg Fendley Inc, and Vanguard Capital to make the two day event a special and memorable occasion for all military personnel.

Starting Nov. 8, the Hopi High Student Council will host a special Veterans' Banquet and Marine Birthday dinner at the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center starting at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour. A special birthday cake will be cut at 6:30 p.m. A chicken dinner will be served immediately after.

Live entertainment will follow the dinner. The event is free and open to veterans from all military branches of service and their families. The Office of Special Needs will be providing free photos of the attending military.

On Nov. 9, the Miss Hopi Committee is sponsoring the Veterans Day Parade. Float preparation and line up begins at 7 a.m. at the ADOT yard on Highway 264 near the Hopi Veterans Memorial. The parade itself will start down Highway 264 ending at the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center at 9 a.m. with cash prizes given for float winners. Float entry forms are available from Kassondra Yaiva at (520 ) 241-2804 or by emailing a request to misshopicommittee@yahoo.com

A formal day long observance will be held starting at 10:30 a.m. in the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center with posting of national and tribal flags. Several guest speakers are slated to give veterans day addresses including local tribal officials, local veterans and royalty from local schools. All color guards are welcome to participate in the day's activity.

A free turkey dinner will be served during this Nov. 9 activity. Special door prizes and a free photo booth and veteran's information booths will also be a part of the indoor festivities.

The Vets Day Committee is looking for volunteers to help serve the meal (food handlers card required) and help park cars. Donations of desserts and yeast bread to go with the free turkey meal are needed. You may call the committee to volunteer to help serve or donate dessert or bread items at (928) 737-1834.

The VA Outreach Office at Hotevilla will donate surplus military clothing and other items to veterans. To qualify, you must have proof of veteran status by showing a VA Health Care card, military ID or military discharge papers with a current ID.

All military personnel are encouraged to attend and enjoy their special day. Blue and Gold Star mothers are also especially invited and will be honored at this Hopi veterans day event.
