Some surprises in Bulldogs' baseball, softball tournaments

WINSLOW, Ariz. - There were some surprises in both the Division III Baseball and Softball Tournaments.

The second seeded Winslow Bulldogs were one of the teams upset in the baseball tournament. The Lady Bulldogs earned a berth in the semifinals with a pair of 4-3 extra inning wins. The Bulldogs loss was to the Cinderella team of the tournament, Fountain Hills. The Falcons are a 15th seed and are in the semifinals with a number one seed River Valley, a fifth seed Blue Ridge and a sixth seed Estrella Foothills.

In the baseball tournament at Surprise on Tuesday, 16th seeded Snowflake edged 17th seeded Camp Verde 4-2, ninth seeded Mingus blasted 24th seed Monument Valley 14-2, 12th seeded Thatcher defeated 21st seeded Safford 9-5, 13th seeded Tombstone blasted 20th seeded Page 9-1, 11th seeded Willcox defeated 22nd seeded Combs 6-2, 10th seeded Empire bomber 23rd seeded Ganado 14-0 and 15rh seeded Fountain Hills was a 10-2 winner over 18th seeded Morenci.

On Friday, Fountain Hills got a big 8-5 upset win over the second seeded Winslow Bulldogs. And was to play Empire, an 8-2 winner over seventh seeded Window Rock. Holbrook got big upset win 3-1 over third seeded Chino Valley. The Roadrunners were to face six seeded Estrella Foothills on Saturday, 5-1 winners over Willcox. Fourth seeded Scottsdale Christian demolished Tombstone 9-1 and was to meet fifth seeded Blue Ridge, 8-7 winners over Thatcher on Saturday. Top seeded River Valley defeated Snowflake 7-3 and was to meet Mingus, 9-0 winners over eighth seeded Show Low.

On Saturday, River Valley nipped Mingus 2-1 and will meet Blue Ridge, 0-3 winners over Scottsdale Christian on Friday in the semifinals. Estrella Foothills eliminated the Holbrook Roadrunners 11-1 and will meet Fountain Hills, 5-3 winners over Empire in the other semifinal game on Friday.

The softball tournament had fewer upset than the baseball tournament as the semifinals contain a top seeded Payson, a second seeded Estrella Foothills and a third seeded Winslow. Only fifth seeded Bourgade Catholic made the semifinals without being a top four seed and they defeated fourth seeded Benson to get there.

In the softball tournament on Wednesday 17th seed Fountain Hills defeated 16th seed Monument Valley 6-0, 24th seed Coolidge upset ninth seeded Window Rock 6-3, 21st seeded Tuba City upset 12th seeded Page 11-4, 13th seeded Willcox had no trouble with Horizon Honors winning 11-1, 19th seeded Florence defeated 14th seeded Chino Valley 4-1, 11 seeded River Valley defeated 22nd seeded Morenci 6-2, 10th seeded Safford edged 23rd seeded Show Low 54 and 15th seeded Snowflake nipped 18th seeded Cortez 16-6.

On Friday at Rose Mofford Complex top seeded Payson defeated Fountain Hills 7-1 and were to meet eighth seeded Mingus 11-5 winners over Coolidge. Fourth seeded Benson defeated Willcox 12-2 and was to meet fifth seeded Bourgade Catholic a 4-0 winner over Tuba City on Saturday. The third seeded Winslow Lady Bulldogs edged Florence 4-3 in an eight-inning game to advance against sixth seeded Blue Ridge on Saturday. Blue Ridge defeated River Valley 10-1. Seventh seeded Empire defeated Safford 8-1 and was to meet second Seeded Estrella Foothills on Saturday. Estrella Foothills ousted Snowflake 7-1.

On Saturday, Payson nipped Mingus 8-7 to reach the semifinals on Friday. The Lady Longhorns will meet Bourgade Catholic, 3-0 winners over Benson. The Winslow Lady Bulldogs earned a berth in the semifinals with a 4-3 victory over Blue Ridge in an eight inning game, their second extra inning win of the tournament. Winslow will play Estrella Foothills on Friday. Estrella Foothills defeated Empire 7-6 to earn their berth in the semifinals.
