Winslow girls, Snowflake boys win Jan. 6

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs had little trouble with the Snowflake Lady Lobos in Winslow on Jan. 6 but the Bulldog boys' team lost a game they had led after each quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Snowflake Lady Lobos 64-35 on Jan. 6. The win left the Lady Bulldogs with a magnificent record of 12-2 for the season and dropped Snowflake's mark to 6-10.

Winslow led 22-8 after the first quarter of play and 36-18 at the intermission. The margin was a commanding 53-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Corey Nez led all scorers with 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Taramika Lee and Kiersten Nezzie were also in double figures for Winslow with 11 points each. Mattea Begaii was the fourth Winslow player in double digits with 10 points. Snowflake had two players in double figures as Tandis Yellowhair and Natalie Elkins both scored 10 points.

The Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to play in Holbrook on Saturday. That game will be followed by a streak of four home games against Coconino on Jan. 10, Window Rock on Jan. 17, Blue Ridge on Jan. 19 and Flagstaff on Jan. 20.

Scoring for Snowflake were Devrie Woodside 5, Brylee Coplan 2, Caitlin Christensen 2, Tandis Yellowhair 10, Natalie Elkins 10, Tara Nezzie 2 and Lisha Titus 4.

Scoring for Winslow were Halle Hayes 1, Mattea Begaii 10, Laylane Benslow 2, Tatum Charley 6, Kiersten Nezzie 11, Corey Nez 12, Taramika Lee 11, Ernestine Thomas 3, Marcella Joe 2, Robina Villanueva 4 and Tannon Tom 2.

The boys' game was a different story entirely as the Snowflake Lobos edged the Winslow Bulldogs 58-54 in a game led by the Bulldogs after every quarter but the last one. The loss left the Bulldogs with a record of 8-7 for the season.

Winslow led 18-11 after the first quarter of play and 31-27 at the intermission. The margin was a narrow 41-38 at the end of the third quarter with the Bulldogs still on top. Snowflake scored 20 points in the final period though while holding the Bulldogs to just 13 to take the victory.

The margin of victory was at the charity stripe where the Lobos were 13 of 21 to just nine of 14 for the Bulldogs. The fourth period was especially telling as the Lobos were six of seven in the quarter while Winslow was one for one.

Chase Walden led the Lobos with 15 points and tied Tyler Williams of Winslow for game high honors. Tanner Yellowhair was also in double figures for Snowflake with 14 points. Michael Goldtooth with 13 points and Tremayne Nez with 10 points were in double figures for the Bulldogs.
