Valley Sanders tops Tuba City, Many Farms over Winslow in Sectional Tournament

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Valley Sanders Lady Pirates and the Many Farms Lady Lobos both won very closely contested girls' basketball games in the opening round of the Division III Sectional Tournament played in Winslow on Tuesday. They were to play on Friday at Chinle with the winner playing for the championship on Saturday.

  The Valley Sanders Lady Pirates defeated the Tuba City Lady Warriors 33-30 in the Division III Sectional Tournament. The win improved Valley Sanders' record to 29-2 for the season and dropped Tuba City to a still impressive 23-6. Valley Sanders was to play Many Farms, a 46-43 winner over Winslow, in Chinle on Friday. Tuba City was eliminated from the Sectional Tournament but will likely play in the Division III State Tournament.

Valley Sanders led by a single point 7-6 after the first period but the low scoring game was tied 13-13 at the half. The margin was still a close 22-20 in favor of Tuba City after three quarters of play. Valley Sanders scored the winning points in the final minute.

Andrea Nez with 10 points for Valley Sanders was the only player for either team in double figures. Chelena Betoney of the Lady Pirates had nine points. Jaime Roe led Tuba City with eight points.

In the second game the Many Farms Lady Lobos defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 46-43 in the Division III Sectional Tournament. The win improved Many Farms' record to 26-5 f0r the season and dropped Winslow to a still impressive 23-5. Many Farms was to play Valley Sanders, a 33-30 winner over Tuba City, in Chinle on Friday. The Lady Bulldogs were eliminated from the Sectional Tournament but will likely have a berth in the Division III State Tournament.

Winslow scored the first eight points of the game and led 12-9 after the first period. The Lady Bulldogs were still up 25-19 at the half. Many Farms took its first lead with less than a minute left in the third quarter and led 36-33 entering the final period. The teams swapped leads in the fourth quarter with Many Farms getting a key steal and score in the closing seconds.

Briana Clah led all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Lobos but was the only player in double figures for Many Farms. Danekka Yazzie and Kanisha Faber both scored eight points for the Lady Lobos.

Kiersten Nezzie and Mattea Begaii each scored 12 for the Lady Bulldogs and Corey Nez was also in double figures with 10 points for Winslow.
