Winslow Bulldogs win four, lose one at Wolves Classic

AVONDALE, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs won four games and lost one at the Wolves Classic played at Estrella High School on April 5, 6 and 7. The results left the Bulldogs with a 14-4 record for the season. Winslow lost to Chino Valley 4-3 in its only game on April 5. April 6 saw the Bulldogs defeat Shot Low 12-8 and Dysart 11-5. On April 7 the Bulldogs edged Florence 8-7 and defeated Holbrook 11-1

In the loss to Chino Valley on April 5, Caleb Layden took the loss giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on just five hits and four walk while fanning eight in the full seven innings of work. Chino Valley had four of their five hits in a three run second inning but a costly error accounted for all three runs being unearned. The Cougars scored what prove to be the winning run in the seventh inning without benefit of a hit. A walk and a wild pitch figured in the scoring. Winslow scored twice in the fifth inning and once in the seventh. The Bulldogs only had three hits. Matt Smith was two for four and Vittorio Sells was one for three.

The Bulldogs righted themselves after the loss on Thursday and won two games on April 6 and two more on April 7 for a very satisfying tournament experience.

Chris Garrett got the win over Dysart 11-5 on April 6 giving up five runs on eight hits and five walks in seven innings. Winslow scored three in the first inning and three more in the third after Dysart had scored twice in the second. Three more in the fifth and two in the sixth completed the Winslow scoring. Dysart scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Vittorio Sells, Chris Garrett and Colton Corum were two for three with Corum having a home run and a double and Garrett a double. Matt Smith was two for four with a double. Caleb Layden, Vicenzio Sells and Jon Bollin were all one for three. Adrian Montoya was one for four.

Matt Cirre got the 12-8 win over Show Low on April 6 in relief of Aaron Martin. He worked three runs, none of which was earned, on three hits and a walk in four innings. Martin gave up five runs of which only one was earned on six hits in two innings of work. Winslow scored a run in the first inning and three in each in the second, third and fourth innings and completed their scoring with two runs in the sixth inning. Show Low got five runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. Vicenzio Sells was three for three. Adrian Montoya was two for three with a triple. Caleb Layden was two for four. Vicenzio Sells was two for five with a home run. Matt Smith, Colton Corum and Matt Cirre were one for four with Smith having a double.

Colton Corum got the win in relief on April 7 in the 8-7 victory over the Florence Gophers. He worked three and two thirds innings in relief or Jon Bollin giving up two runs on five hits and two walks. Matt Smith earned a save by working the final two innings and not allowing a hit or a run. Winslow scored five runs in the first inning and three in the second. Florence tallied five in the second and one each in the third and fourth innings. Jon Bollin was one for one. Adrian Montoya was two for three with a double. Chris Garrett was two for four. Vittorio Sells was one for three. Caleb Layden, Matt Smith, Colton Corum and Matt Cirre were all one for four with Smith having a triple.

Jon Oso got the 11-1 win over Holbrook on April 7 giving up a run on five hits and a walk in five innings. Both teams scored a run in the second inning but Winslow tallied three in the third and seven in the fourth for the victory. Matt Cirre was one for one. Vittorio Sells was three for four. Colton Corum and Adrian Montoya were two for three. Jon Oso and Chris Garrett were one for two. Caleb Layden was one for four.

Winslow was slated to host Coconino on April 10 and Snowflake on April 12 before heading to Joseph City on April14for a double-header. Their next game will be against the Flagstaff Eagles in Flagstaff on April 20.
