WINSLOW, Ariz. - On Friday, 11/11/11, 10 members of the Winslow High School Grand Canyon Club and their sponsors Kim Salazar/Chris Gilmore went on a hike down to Fossil Creek.

Fossil Creek is located near Strawberry, Ariz. The hike is approximately four miles down to the creek with an altitude change of 2,000 feet. The students went on the hike not only to prepare for the Grand Canyon raft trip in April but to get into the outdoors and begin to learn about each other and the region we live in.

Once they got down to Fossil Creek they experienced the springs of the creek. The water is 72 degrees year round and is one of two wild rivers in Arizona. In 2005, a dam was removed and the river was returned to its natural state.

The students did a great job walking down to the river and once they experienced the warm water they jumped right in. It is hard to imagine that in the middle of November you can go swimming in northern Arizona.

The trail is well maintained but coming out of the creek is a lot more difficult after playing for sometime in the water and looking at all the natural wonders. While it is four miles back to the trailhead it is a steep incline. The students had a great time and for most of the students it was the first time they went hiking.

To get to Fossil Creek head south out of Winslow to the town of Strawberry. Make a right on Fossil Creek Road for about four miles to the trailhead. The club plans on going on more hikes this school year.
