Winslow Lady Bulldogs advance to semi-finals in state

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won their first two games in the Arizona State 3A Softball Tournament at Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix on May 6-7. The Lady Bulldogs easily topped River Valley 9-0 and Show Low 10-0 in those games to earn a berth in the semi-finals against Safford on May 6.

On May 6, the Lady Bulldogs topped River Valley 9-0 and were never in trouble. On May 7, they shutout the Show Low Lady Cougars 10-0 in a game called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Show Low had edged Window Rock 3-2 to earn the berth against Winslow in the quarterfinals.

Against Show Low on May 7, Winslow took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Gabby Stacey, a hit batsman and a stolen base. The margin became 6-0 in the third inning on a double by Melissa Jacobs and singles by Arianna Huerta, Gabby Stacey and Jaleisa Hayes. The four run fifth inning brought the 10-run mercy rule into effect and featured singles by Jaleisa Hayes and Taylor Baca.

Jaleisa Hayes went the distance for the win allowing just two hits in five innings and striking out 13 Lady Cougars. She also led the team at the plate with a three for three day. Taylor Baca was two for two with a double. Melissa Jacobs was two for three with a double. Arianna Huerta was one for one. Gabby Stacey was one for two.

In the other bracket, Snowflake and Estrella Foothills were set to meet in the semifinals at on May13 after the Winslow-Safford game.

Snowflake defeated Florence 6-3 in the quarterfinals and Estrella Foothills beat Empire 10-4 in their quarter final game on May 7.

On May 6, Winslow defeated River Valley 9-0, Show Low nipped Window Rock 3-2, Santa Cruz ousted Payson 3-2, Safford shutout Sedona Red Rock 5-0, Snowflake ousted Fountain Hills 7-0, Florence bested Blue Ridge 8-1, and Empire clubbed Tuba City 12-1 and Estrella Foothills shutout Holbrook 11-0.

Winslow was the only 3A North Region team to win a state tournament game as Holbrook and Tuba City lost decisively. Window Rock gave Show Low a good game before losing 3-2.
