Bulldog Cagers active this summer

WINSLOW, Ariz. - One key to a successful basketball program may be activity in the summer that provides competition and an opportunity to improve the skills of players and their ability to play together.

The Winslow High School basketball players are having a busy summer under the direction of head Coach Ricky Greer and Assistant Paul Landis. The future Bulldogs have participated in two tournaments and won six games while losing seven going into last weekend's action. The team was to play a tournament in the valley likely to consist of at least four or five games and will be journeying to San Diego soon for the final action of the summer.

Players participating included Tremayne Nez, Josh Denny, Tyler Williams, Brennan James, Donovan Warren, Michael Goldtooth, Lukas Shirley, and Millard Thomas, Timmy Little, Junior Stacey, Tito Johnson and Tremayne Williams.

The Bulldogs were at Durango, Colo. for the Fort Lewis Team Camp, a tournament which attracts top teams from Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. Winslow won two games and lost four there. Host Durango pounded the Bulldogs on June 3 51-24 in the team's opening game. On June 4 Winslow defeated Cortez, Colorado 54-38, lost to Sandia, New Mexico 64-33 and St. Pius X 60-38 before beating Piedra Vista, New Mexico 52-48. Sandia beat the Bulldogs for a second time 42-18 on June 5 in the team's final game of the tournament.

In this tournament, Tyler Williams was in double figures against Cortez with 10 points and Tremayne Nez had 10 points against Sandia. Williams had 16 points and Nez 14 against Piedra Vista.

Winslow won four games and lost two at the Flagstaff Team Camp on June 10 and 11. Monument Valley edged the Bulldogs 57-52 in the team's first game on June 10. The Bulldogs topped the Bradshaw Mountain B squad 57-44 and lost to the Bradshaw Mountain A squad 60-53 in other games that day. June 11 was a good day for the Bulldogs as they pounded Miami 53-20, nipped Flagstaff 47-44 and defeated Greyhills 54-21.

In this tournament Winslow got significant scoring from Tyler Williams with 24 against Monument Valley and 13 against Bradshaw Mountain B Team. Josh Denny had 11 against Bradshaw Mountain B Team. Williams had 22 against Bradshaw Mountain A Team while Tremayne Nez and Donovan Warren each had 10 points. Williams had 16 against Miami. Nez led the way against Flagstaff with 21 points. Michael Goldtooth was also in double figures with 10 points against Flagstaff. Brennan James led the Bulldogs with 10 points against Greyhills.

Snowflake defeated the Bulldogs 61-54 in a single game on June 15. Tyler Williams was high scorer for Winslow with 18 points.

The Bulldogs were to participate in a tournament in the Phoenix area on Friday and Saturday, which will be reported next week.
