Bulldog Cagers complete summer play 11-12

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow High School basketball players completed play for the summer with a tournament in San Diego and junior varsity and freshman games in Flagstaff. Games scheduled to be played in Snowflake on July 5 were cancelled. The varsity players had a record of 11-12 after winning three and losing three at San Diego.

Coach Ricky Greer reported that the team had a good time and experience at San Diego on June 24-26. Losses in their first two games in bracket play put the Bulldogs into a weak bracket for the rest of the tournament.

The first game was a 42-32 loss to Cathedral Catholic of Del Mar, California. The second was a 55-54 loss in double overtime to La Costa Canyon No. 2 of La Costa, California. Lucas Shirley led the Bulldogs in the first loss with nine points. Michael Goldtooth had 23 points in the second loss.

The Bulldogs got their first win on June 25 over the American Community School from Ammon, Jordan 57-34. Michael Goldtooth scored 15 to lead Winslow. A 28-26 loss to the San Diego Jewish Academy of Del Mar California was a big disappointment to the Bulldogs. Their final game of that day saw the Bulldogs get an easy win over the American Community School of Ammon, Jordan 51-18.Tremayne Nez and Brennan James each scored 14 points. Lucas Shirley was also in double figures with 11 points and Michael Goldtooth scored nine.

Winslow defeated Ash Fork 55-22 in their final game of the tournament and the summer. Brennan James scored 15 points and Vinny Sells was in double figures with 10 points.

In the junior varsity Flagstaff Team Camp on June 24 Winslow defeated Arizona Lutheran 57-48, lost to Prescott B 50-42 and defeated Page 48-24. On June 25 the Winslow junior varsity defeated Prescott B 56-52 and lost to Greyhills B 46-28 for a record of 3-2 for those two days.

In the Flagstaff Freshman Team Camp on June 24 Winslow defeated Greyhills B 58-43 and Flagstaff C 52-31 before losing to Page 48-42. On June 25 Arizona Lutheran defeated Winslow 49-38 leaving the team with two wins and two losses in the camp.

The Bulldogs lost a number of talented players from last year's team but have seen improvement during summer action.
