Flagstaff Medical Center opens new cardiac catheterization lab

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Flagstaff Medical Center has opened a new state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab, as part of its commitment to providing the most advanced cardiac care to the residents and visitors of northern and central Arizona.

The new cardiac catheterization laboratory at FMC utilizes the latest in technology - the new Allura Xper FD20 system from Philips Medical Systems. The sophisticated system offers superb image quality and advanced 3-D tools that provide crisp views of the smallest details on a 52-inch flat-screen monitor. The ceiling-mounted camera allows for a wider variety of angles without having to move the patient. The advanced X-ray technology requires less radiation exposure to patients and staff.

"Both our patients and physicians will benefit from the speed and superior image accuracy of this new system," explained Steven Lewis, M.D., FMC Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President. "It will allow our physicians to complete a variety of diagnostic and corrective procedures faster, and that means the patient is off the table and on their way to recovery and home and an improved quality of life much sooner."

The technology of the Allura system allows for more heart and vascular procedures that would have previously required surgery. These procedures can now be performed through minimally invasive catheters, most often inserted through the large vein in the groin. They include abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, stents in the carotid arteries of the neck and in the arteries of the heart, balloon angioplasty, insertion of pacemaker and implantable cardiac defibrillators, and diagnostic procedures to identify blockages. Among the many benefits of catheter-based interventions are shorter hospital stays, reduced recovery time without the pain of a large incision and minimal surgical scarring.
