Blog: Wake up, Washington!

"When a man wantonly destroys one of the works of man we call him a vandal. When he destroys one of the works of god we call him a sportsman."

- Joseph Wood Krutch

I couldn't help it. I had to smile when I heard on the news that a 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit Washington, D.C. earlier this morning. It just reinforced the message I have been a firm believer in for most of my adult life about our blatant disregard for and mistreatment of our poor Mother Earth. Whether you are a believer in Native American mysticism or not, there is no way one can simply dismiss this earthquake as pure coincidence. After all, who could have predicted that an earthquake would occur in Washington D.C. on the same day that a rally in support of the sacred San Francisco Peaks is being held in Phoenix, Arizona.

Believe it or not, Mother Earth has been sending us messages for quite a number of years to let us know how much she disapproves of our treatment of her, but unfortunately, we have repeatedly failed to heed her warnings. In a series of past editorials, I attempted to explain that the increase in natural and environmental disasters across the world was simply the earth's way of striking back against humankind in order to let us know who the true supreme beings are. Native Americans already know that it's our sacred deities that we pray to on a daily basis who hold dominion over us.

Here in Flagstaff, it was those same deities who sent us near-record snowfalls earlier this year, as if to tell us, "You don't need artificial snow..." All over this world, messages are being sent to us in many different shapes and forms. Some of those messages are less violent than others, but the overall message is the same: destroy the earth, destroy yourselves.

To President Obama and members of Congress - Mother Earth sent you her message earlier this morning. Are you going to listen?
