Bulldogs place second in Blue Ridge Tourney

LAKESIDE, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs finished second in the Blue Ridge Invitational Tournament with a 5-1 record in the event. Winslow lost to the host Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 83-77 in the Championship Game after defeating Round Valley 52-47 in the semi-finals. Both of those games were played on Thursday.

In the Championship Game, Blue Ridge took a 19-14 first quarter lead but the Bulldogs pulled to within a single point at 36-35 at the half. The Yellowjackets had a prolific third period and increased their advantage to 58-44. The fourth quarter saw both teams scoring frequently as the Bulldogs put up 33 points but gave up 27 and still finished six behind the Yellowjackets.

Aleck Jensen of Blue Ridge led all scorers with 23 points. Larry Wilcox with 20 points and Robert Kinney with 14 were also in double figures for the Yellowjackets. Rudy Carlson scored nine points for the victors who had two more players with eight points each.

Tyler Williams led the bulldogs with 21 points. Kraig Shirley with 18 points and Dale Dixon with 12 were also in double figures for Winslow.  Micheaux had nine points for the Bulldogs.

In the Round Valley game the Bulldogs had a narrow 11-9 lead after the first period and a21-18 advantage at the intermission. The lead was 35-28 after three quarters but the Elks cut into the margin slightly in the final period.

Dustin Donaldson of Round Valley was the top scorer with 13 points. The Elks also had a player with 11 points but only six Elks scored at all. Lakota Shirley led Winslow with 10 points. Jevon Estelle had nine points and Tyler Williams and Kraig Shirley each scored eight points for the Bulldogs. Winslow had eight players score.

The Bulldogs had won two games on Wednesday to run their record to 4-0 in the tournament and 12-4 for the season. Winslow had defeated Joseph City 78-58 and Alchesay 80-61 on Tuesday at the beginning of the tournament. On Wednesday they bested the Northland Prep Spartans 59-27 and the Florence Gophers 67-57.

The Bulldogs began the 2010 portion of their schedule on Tuesday at home against Greyhills in a non-regional game and will host Ganado on Friday and journey to Tuba City on Saturday for 3A North Region contests. The Bulldogs started the New Year with a13-4 record and a 0-1 record in the region.
