Bulldogs route Scouts, 72-61

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Window Rock Scouts 72-61 in a 3A North Region basketball game played in Winslow on Saturday. Winslow improved its record to 22-6 for the season and 7-2 in the 3A North Region.

Chinle is undefeated in the 3A North Region and in command. Winslow and Holbrook split their two games and are in a battle for second place in the region. Holbrook still has a game with Chinle slated to be played on Wednesday (today) in Chinle. That game could play a big role in seeding for both the regional and state tournaments.

The Bulldogs led 18-11 after the first quarter and a commanding 40-23 at the intermission. The third quarter ended with Winslow comfortably in front 64-39. Window Rock cut into the margin in the final period but the gap was too much to overcome.

Dale Dixon was the only Bulldog in double figures with 15 points but Winslow had 12 players score to only five for Window Rock. Kraig Shirley, Jaken Yazzie and Lakota Shirley all scored nine points for the Bulldogs.

Todd Perkins of Window Rock was the game high scorer with 23 points. Otis Henderson with 16 points and Ote Manson with 13 points were also in double figures for the Scouts.

Winslow had a pair of potentially important home games slated in the final week or the regular season against Tuba City on Tuesday and Monument Valley on Friday.

Girls game

The Window Rock Lady Scouts defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 60-57 in an important 3A North Region basketball game played in Winslow on Saturday.  The win improved Window Rock's regional record to 8-0 and their season record to 18-4. Winslow fell to 5-3 in the region and their record for the season fell to 18-4. The Lady Scouts are likely 3A North winners with two victories over both Winslow and Monument Valley.

The Lady Bulldogs led 15-10 after the first quarter but trailed 27-25 at the intermission. The Lady Scouts had a fairly comfortable 48-40 lead going into the final quarter but the Lady Bulldogs came back and made it anyone's game until the final buzzer.

Shernise Ward led all scorers with 24 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Kourtney Shirley with 18 points and Paige Shirley with 10 points were also in double figures for Winslow. Uncharacteristically, only two other girls scored for Winslow with a total of five points.

Window Rock had two scorers in double figures with Ashley Mitchell tallying 21 points and LaCresha Campbell with 13 points. Violet Wood scored nine and Coralie Clark eight for the Lady Scouts.

The key to the game for Window Rock was the three point line from beyond which the Lady Scouts were deadly. Mitchell hit five three pointers and Campbell sunk three of the super shots.

Winslow had games remaining at home against Tuba City and Monument Valley which could have an effect on state tournament positions.
