Bulldogs beat Holbrook

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Holbrook Roadrunners 5-1 in a 3A North Region baseball game played on Tuesday, April 20. The win left the Bulldogs with an 18-4 record for the season and left them undefeated in the region.

Winslow scored without benefit of a hit in the first inning on three walks and a hit batsman. Holbrook tied the game in the top of the third on three single. Winslow again made the most of its only hit of the inning and scored three times in the bottom of the fourth on two walks, an error and Levi Smith's single to take a 4-1 lead. The final run scored in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Anthony Huerta, an error and a double by Ty Hancock.

Tommy Gomez got the pitching victory working the full seven innings and giving up one run on five hits and a walk while fanning six Roadrunners.

The Bulldogs made the most of three hits. Hancock, Huerta and Levi Smith were all one for three with Hancock having a double.

Bulldogs take two from Scouts

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Window Rock Scouts twice on Wednesday 14-4 and 13-3 in 3A North Region contests. Both games were shortened by the 10 run mercy rule. The wins left the Bulldogs with a 20-4 record for the season and clinched the 3A North Region Championship and a berth in the semi-finals of the regional tournament on Friday in Winslow.

Sean Pugh was the winning pitcher in the first game allowing four runs on five hits and a walk while fanning five Scouts.

The game was close for the first two innings with Window Rock actually leading 2-0 after the first half inning thanks to a two run homer by Scout center fielder Billison after a double by shortstop Hickson. Winslow took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first on a single by Anthony Huerta, a walk and a home run by Ty Hancock. Nine runs in the bottom of the third increased the lead to a commanding 11-2 for the Bulldogs. Four singles, a double, a walk and six Window Rock errors did the trick. Window Rock cut the margin in the top of the fourth to 11-4 on a walk, a double and a single. Winslow scored enough in the bottom of the fourth on three singles and a walk to end the game on the mercy rule 14-4 when the Scouts were scoreless in the top of the fifth.

Huerta was three for four with two doubles. Tommy Gomez and Jevon Estelle were two for three. Levi Smith, Matthew Smith and Sedale Flanagan were all one for two. Rhett Hardy and Vittorio Sells were one for three. Hancock was one for four with a home run.

Hancock pitched the second game and allowed three runs, none of which were earned, on seven hits and no walks. He had five strikeouts.

Winslow scored twice in the bottom of the first on singles by Huerta and Levi Smith, a triple by Hancock and a single by Estelle. A single by Hardy, a walk and an error accounted for two runs and a 4-0 Winslow lead in the second inning. Estelle, Matthew Smith and Hardy had singles and an error was enough to increase the lead to 6-0 in the third inning. Window Rock scored twice in the top of the fourth on an error and a pair of singles. Winslow used a single by Huerta and an error to increase the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Window Rock scored in the top of the fifth on an error and a double by Billison. Winslow scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits, a walk and an error. Hancock homered to increase the lead to the final 13-3 score and end the game on the 10 run mercy rule.

Estelle was three for three for the Bulldogs at the plate. Levi Smith was two for two with a double. Huerta was three for four with a pair of doubles. Hardy was two for three. Levi Smith was two for three with a double. Hancock was two for four with a home run and a triple. Matthew Smith was one for three.

The Bulldogs finished the regional schedule undefeated and had a game left at Valley Sanders on Friday.
