Lady Bulldogs defeat Lady Bruins, nip Lady Lobos

WINSLOW, Ariz. -The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Hopi Lady Bruins 10-0 and edged the Snowflake Lady Lobos 7-5 in non-regional softball games played at Winslow on Friday and Saturday. The wins improved Winslow's record to 21-2 for the season.

Mallory Smith got the win against Hopi allowing no runs, just one hit and no walks. She fanned 10 in six innings of work. The game was called due to the 10 run mercy rule when the Lady Bulldogs reached that total in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Lady Bulldogs scored in the first inning against Hopi on a single by Gabby Stacey and a double by Mireya Ulibarri. The lead grew to 4-0 in the second inning on a walk to Bernice Gover, singles by Rebecca Perez, Smith, Stacey and Ulibarri. A double by Melissa Jacobs and singles by Perez and Smith made it 5-0 in the third inning. Three more runs in the fourth inning made it 8-0. The hits were doubles by Ulibarri and Yazzie, a triple by Felicia Nagle and a single by Jacobs. A single by Nagle and a home run by Kyli Parsons plated two runs in the sixth inning and ended the game on the mercy rule.

Ulibarri was two for two for the Lady Bulldogs with a double. Kelly Pugh was one for one. Stacey, Jacobs, Perez and Smith were all two for three with Jacobs and Perez having doubles. Nagle was two for four with a triple. Parsons and Yazzie were one for four with Yazzie having a double and Parsons a home run.

Yazzie got the win against Snowflake giving up five runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks. She fanned four.

Snowflake took a 3-0 lead against the Lady Bulldogs in the first inning on Saturday on three hits and an error. The Lady Bulldogs cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning on a home run by Nagle, then took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third on two walks, and singles by Ulibarri, Yazzie and Perez. The lead grew to 7-3 in the fourth inning on singles by Gover and Ulibarri and two errors. Snowflake cut the margin to 7-4 in the top of the fifth on a pair of hits and to the 7-5 final in the top of the seventh on a walk and a single.

Ulibarri paced the Winslow attack with a three for four day. Nagle was an important two for two with a home run. Stacey and Perez were both one for two. Gover and Jacobs were one for three. Yazzie was one for four.
