3A North teams begin basketball season

The 3A North Region basketball teams began play on Monday and Tuesday and have between four and six games scheduled each before the Christmas holidays. The first regional game will not be played until Tuesday, Dec. 8 when the Chinle Wildcats visit the Ganado Hornets.

Basketball is a sport in which the regional teams excel. The girls' conference championship last season was between Winslow and Monument Valley and the third strongest team in the state was probably Window Rock. Chinle and Tuba City also fielded and usually field strong teams. The boys' teams from the division are also strong with Chinle, Monument Valley, Window Rock, Ganado, Holbrook and Winslow all capable of competing with anyone.

On Monday, Nov. 23, the Window Rock Scouts were at Many Farms, the Tuba City Warriors hosted the Sinagua Mustangs and the Ganado Hornets were at Pinon. On Tuesday, Nov. 24, the Winslow Bulldogs hosted the Payson Longhorns, Chinle hosted Red Mesa, the Monument Valley Mustangs were at the Hopi Bruins and the Holbrook Roadrunners hosted the Snowflake Lobos. All of these games were non-regional affairs. Scores were not available at press time.

On Tuesday, Dec. 1, Winslow will host Snowflake, Chinle will host Round Valley, Window Rock will host Fort Wingate, New Mexico, Holbrook will be at Show Low, Tuba City will be at Greyhills and Monument Valley will be at Page. None of these contests are regional games. Holbrook will play non-regional games at Valley Sanders on Wednesday, Dec. 3 and on Monday, Dec. 7 at Payson.

On Tuesday, Dec. 8, in addition to the regional game between Chinle and Ganado, Winslow will host the Flagstaff Eagles, Window Rock will play at Valley Sanders and Tuba City will host the Hopi Bruins. On Wednesday, Dec. 9, Window Rock will host Round Valley, Winslow will visit Show Low and Tuba City will visit Page in non-regional games. Monument Valley will host Red Mesa on Thursday, Dec. 10 in a non-regional game.

The Ganado Hornets will meet the Window Rock Scouts at Window Rock in a regional game on Friday, Dec. 11 and the Tuba City Warriors at Tuba City on Saturday, Dec. 12.

On Monday, Dec. 14, Winslow will host the Hopi Bruins, Ganado will host Red Mesa and Monument Valley will host Greyhills. All of these will be non-regional games.

On Tuesday, Dec. 15, Chinle will host Winslow in a regional game, Holbrook will host Window Rock in a regional game and Tuba City will host Monument Valley in a regional game. The Holbrook boys will host the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets in a non-regional contest on Thursday, Dec. 17. The only other game prior to the Christmas break will be Chinle at Monument Valley in a regional contest on Tuesday, Dec. 22.

The schedules listed above are regular season games and do not include tournaments in which 3A North Region teams will compete. Both the boys and girls teams play on the dates indicated except for the places where it is noted that one team or the other plays on a given date.
