Expect delays on U.S. 160, Kayenta to Dennehotso

HOLBROOK, Ariz. - Drivers on U.S. Highway 160 should plan for delays as part of a pavement preservation project the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is conducting from Kayenta to Dennehotso. ADOT will resurface the roadway from milepost (MP) 388 to MP 416 with rubberized asphalt, which will provide a smoother ride to motorists.

Paving began June 29 near the junction of Navajo Route 59 at MP 402, and proceed east toward Dennehotso. Drivers should expect multiple pilot car operation areas, as workers will conduct the pavement and guardrail work simultaneously in different locations throughout the project area. Construction hours are weekdays during daylight hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and some weekend work may be necessary.

As part of the overall project, drivers can expect lane closures, one-way traffic, pilot vehicles and delays of approximately 15-30 minutes through October. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph in the project area, and vehicle travel lanes are restricted to widths of 14 feet or less. Work on the bridge at Church Rock Wash east of Kayenta, which is expected to occur in August, will include width restrictions of 12 feet or less. Work at the junction of U.S. 160 and U.S. 163 in Kayenta is expected to occur in early August, and the current phase of the project is expected to be complete by October. Additional work may take place in summer 2010.

The $8.1-million project includes installation of a traffic signal video detection unit in Kayenta and intersection improvements at the junction of U.S. 160 and U.S. 163, bridge rehabilitation work at Church Rock Wash, cattle guard and guardrail work, drainage improvement, signing, pavement markings and other associated work. This project is being funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is part of federal funding given to the state for economic recovery.

Motorists must obey all posted restrictions throughout the project area. Message boards and other traffic signs will provide additional construction details. During lane closures, flagmen and law enforcement officers will assist with traffic movement and compliance with posted restrictions.

ADOT and the contractor appreciate the public's patience during construction. For more information, call the project's toll-free hotline at 1-866-659-0658
