Winslow boys, girls teams victorious over Holbrook

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners 65-36 in a 3A North Region basketball game played in Winslow on Jan. 6. The win kept Winslow undefeated at 13-0 for the season and 2-0 in the region. Holbrook fell to 7-11 for the season and 0-1 in the 3A North Region.

Winslow took control of the game in the first period and led 20-5 at the end of the quarter. The second period saw both teams struggle early and score only two points in the first four minutes. Winslow closed the half strong and led 32-12 at the intermission. The Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a commanding 53-22 advantage after three quarters.

Kourtney Shirley was the only player in double figures for either team with 23 points for Winslow. Nicole Baldwin led Holbrook with nine points.

The Lady Bulldogs were slated to play the Snowflake Lady Lobos on Jan. 8 at Snowflake and host the Round Valley Lady Elks on Jan. 10. They were at Ganado on Jan. 13 and will be at Tuba City today.

Boys game

The Winslow Bulldogs built a commanding first half lead and held on to defeat the Holbrook Roadrunners 74-64 in a 3A North Region basketball game played in Winslow on Jan. 6. The win improved Winslow's record to 9-4 for the season and 1-1 in the region. Holbrook fell to 8-7 for the season and 0-1 in the region.

The Bulldogs opened with a strong first quarter and led 26-14 at the end of the period. The lead had increased to 41-26 by the intermission and Winslow had led by 20 points during the second quarter. Holbrook cut the lead to single digits at 50-42 with a strong third quarter. The fourth period was played on nearly equal terms as the Bulldogs held on for the victory.

Kraig Shirley and Dale Dixon paced the Bulldogs scoring attack with 19 points each to lead all scorers. Kyle Cummings led Holbrook with 16 points and Joel Dixson had just one point less for the Roadrunners with 15 points.

The Bulldogs were slated to play non-regional games at Snowflake on Jan. 8 and at home against Round Valley on Jan. 10. They were at Ganado on Jan. 13 and will be at Tuba City today.
