KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - Changes are taking place at the Hopi Substance Abuse Prevention Center (HSAPC). With the recent closing of the Polacca office, HSAPC has consolidated and are now operating out of the Kykotsmovi office. The consolidation has provided the HSAPC staff an opportunity to come together as one team to re-evaluate, strategize, plan, strengthen and rebuild. By pooling their collective talents, resources and the last five years of HSAPC service experience, they are better equipped to look at ways to improve and expand upon the day to day delivery of program services to the Hopi community.

"We were blessed that Dr. Tveten brought the idea of substance abuse mentoring to us as a way to recovery from substance abuse," said Racheal Povatah, center manager. "Now five years later, we have a centrally located center in Kykotsmovi with a staff of three full-time staff to serve Hopi people. When the program began the Polacca Center was the "birthing" place for what the Hopi Substance Abuse Prevention Center has evolved into today. We have created a safe, comfortable environment.

"We have found that the best thing we do for our clients is to meet with them in person rather than sending a letter or a phone call. It's about building that relationship with the client. We also work with other community organizations both on and off the Hopi reservation such as: The Hopi Guidance Center, Hopi Health Care Center, DES, Child Protective Services, Social Services, etc. We encourage clients to utilize other programs along with ours," added Povatah.

Plans are now under way for the Hopi Substance Abuse Prevention Center to host a community-wide open house at the Kykotsmovi office on Friday. HSAPC staff and volunteers will provide a lunch of grilled hotdogs and chili beans with all the fixings from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Kykotsmovi office located behind Kykotsmovi Village Store and next door to The Hopi Foundation. This will be an enjoyable way for the Hopi community to reacquaint themselves with HSAPC staff, its location and services. HSAPC continues to offer one to one mentoring with staff mentors as well as prevention and outreach presentations within the community.

Currently, HSAPC staff is looking to identify places to hold client meetings in all the villages. In this way staff will be able to schedule appointments to meet with clients. For more information on the HSAPC, Friday's open house, client services, or if you have space that may be available for client mentoring appointments, please contact the Kykotsmovi office at (928) 734-0300.
