Letter: Hopi High praised for sportsmanship

To the editor:

On Friday, Sept. 19, the St. Johns Redskins football team traveled to play the Hopi Jr./Sr. High Bruins.

The Hopi Jr./Sr. High football players, cheerleaders, coaches, fans and announcer treated the St. Johns kids with the most kindness and sportsmanship that I have seen in a long time.

The announcer welcomed the Redskins players, cheerleaders, coaches and fans to the stadium and wished them a safe trip home. He did this on more than one occasion.

The Bruin fans cheered their team on to the very end of a very one sided football game. I never heard a bad word said about the Redskins, the Bruins or the officials.

The Bruins' cheerleading squad (12 strong) came over to the St. Johns side to perform two cheers for the Redskin fans and cheerleaders. After the cheers, they each introduced themselves to the Redskin cheerleaders and shook each of their hands. They were very friendly and welcoming.

The Bruins' coach came onto the Redskins' bus after the game and told the football players how well they had done. He also wished them luck for the rest of the season. He told them they not only had skill, but they also had heart.

I've noticed that sportsmanship at the high school level seems to be lacking in many ways in most of the sports played. The Hopi Jr./Sr. High School and the administration, parents and fans have mastered the art of good sportsmanship and kindness to visiting teams.

Way to go, Hopi Bruins! Thank you for treating the St. Johns Redskins so well. We can all benefit from your example.
