To be fair or unfair

Letter

I just want to clarify a misunderstanding that took place. I know for a fact it was blown out of proportion so writing to the editor is the best way to let everyone know what happened.

On Sept. 15, at the Leupp Chapter regular meeting, many issues were discussed and debated. The big topic was of the water needs for Dilkon Health Center.

During the discussion, a longtime respected elder of Leupp by the name of Woody Smith was given the floor to speak. Mr. Smith started his speech okay but midway through his speech, I had to state a "Point of Order."

It was because Mr. Smith was beginning to campaign for the current incumbents and called the "Need for Change" candidates liars. I stated that the other candidates should also be provided time to make things fair.

The chapter then misinterpreted my point of order to Mr. Smith saying that, "I did not want him to speak anymore."

What made things worse is the chapter stated to everyone that they are sorry an elder was asked not to speak and that this is the first time this has happened and next time it won't happen again.

I am confused. During the planning meeting on Sept. 1, it was stated by the chapter that everyone should speak with respect and not attack others that are in the audience. I was not given the opportunity to respond, so why does the chapter have a policy set for one group and another for others.

In no way did I mean to disrespect Mr. Smith. I was just simply restating the chapter's policy. After the meeting I personally apologized to Mr. Smith and stated my reasons for the point of order.

I hope Leupp Chapter will now honor their policy that they expressed during the planning meeting and be fair to everyone.
