Letter: No good comes from gossip

To the editor:

Some crimes cannot be forgiven for the simple reason that the damage has already been done ... gossip for instance.

The town gossip felt bad for the pain she had caused, and desperately wanted to be forgiven. So she went to the medicine woman for help. "Gather all the feathers you can and place one at each door step in town."

The woman did as she was told but still she did not feel forgiven. Returning to the medicine woman with her continued sense of desperation, the elder apologized for leaving out the second part of the cure ... to go back and pick up each feather.

When she did she was very much dismayed that all the feathers had blown away. When she reported this fact to the medicine woman, her profound reply was that one cannot fix the damage done when someone gossips.

People are hurt, their reputations are forever damaged and those who gossip cannot stop what they have begun. Learn not to gossip for everyone's sake, including your own.
