Hopi High recognizes outstanding athletes

POLACCA, Ariz. - Baseball, softball and track athletes received awards May 7 during the athletic awards banquet at Hopi High School.

Hopi High officials consider it an extremely successful season. Baseball, which didn't have a team last year, finished third in the 2A North Conference and earned a trip to the state playoffs. Softball also finished third in conference and also earned a trip to the state playoffs.

Baseball players received the following awards: Lane Benally, Offensive Player of the Year; Jory Qotswisiwama, Defensive Player of the Year; Truman Nuvakuku, Most Improved Player; Travis Nasevama, Bruin Award; and manager Amanda Onsae, Scholar Athlete.

Softball players received the following awards: Torri Youvella, Rookie of the Year; Cassandra Nash, Offensive Player of the Year; Chelsea Nevayaktewa, Garold Koruh Memorial Award for Dedication and Excellence; and Briann "Boo Boo" Laban, Scholar Athlete.

Girls and boys track and field athletes received the following awards: Alyssa Begay, Samantha Clah, Kelly Keith and Tomoko Wilson reach received the Scholar Athlete Award; Desire Torivio received the Outstanding Distance Runner Award; Samantha Clah, Outstanding Sprinter; Alyssa Lomatewama, Outstanding Shot Put Award; Tate Jensen, Outstanding Discuss Thrower Award; Monica Honyumptewa, Most Dedicated Award; Lindsey Yoyokie, Most Dedicated Award; Chad Baker, Outstanding Distance Runner; Erick Kallestewa, Outstanding Sprinter; Desmond Lomayaktewa, Outstanding Shot Put; Paul Quamahongnewa, Outstanding Discuss Thrower; and Justin Secakuku, Most Dedicated and Scholar Athlete.
