Winslow wins 3A North tournament, Window Rock takes second place
The Winslow Bulldogs won the 3A North Region baseball tournament with wins over Holbrook 7-5 and Window Rock 11-2 in Winslow on April 25 and 26. The victories left the Bulldogs with a 22-8 record for the season. They played on May 2 in the state tournament at Surprise and again on May 3 if they won on May 2.
In other regional tournament games, Window Rock defeated Monument Valley 8-2 to earn the right to play Winslow in the Championship Game and Holbrook defeated Monument Valley to win third place in the tournament. Under the AIA's power points system, it is not known who will play who in the state tournament or even which of the teams will make the tournament.
In Friday's game against Holbrook, Winslow won 7-5 with Roman Guzman getting the win. He gave up five runs, but only one was earned on six hits, two walks and a hit batsman. He fanned five batters in five innings of work. Anthony Huerta worked a pair of scoreless innings in relief and gave up one hit while fanning four.
Holbrook took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on singles by Castillo and Hatch. Winslow scored three in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 lead. Kirk Ramsey walked and Ray Grabowski singled before Anthony Huerta reached on an error. Levi Smith walked and Jordan Echoles and Tommy Gomez singled.
Holbrook cut the margin to 3-2 in the top of the second on a Winslow error and a single by Perkins, and then tied the contest at 3-3 in the top of the third on a single by Paz, a hit batsman and a walk.
Winslow regained the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the third on a triple by Jordan Echoles and a single by Gomez.
The fifth inning was big for both teams. Holbrook went ahead 5-4 in the top of the frame on an error, a double by Hatch a walk and a single by Reidhead. The Bulldogs struck for three in the bottom of the frame to take the 7-5 lead that wound up as the final score. Ty Hancock singled, Smith doubled and Echoles, John Gonzales, Casey Hancock and Ramsey singled.
In the Championship Game on Saturday, Efran Kinlicheenie got the win in the 11-2 win over Window Rock. He worked six innings and gave up two runs on five hits and five walks. He had 11 strikeouts. Echoles worked the final inning and gave up a hit. He had one strikeout.
Window Rock was seeded first in the tournament and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double by Price and two balks. Winslow tied the score in the top of the second on a walk to Echoles, a balk and a single by Casey Hancock.
The fifth inning was productive for both teams. Winslow took a 3-1 lead on singles by Huerta, Ty Hancock and Smith. The Scouts cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame on a single by Young, a walk and a single by Price.
The Bulldogs upped their lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth when after two were out Ramsey doubled, Grabowski and Huerta singled and Ty Hancock tripled. Five more runs in the top of the seventh put the game out of reach and the final score on the scoreboard. In the rally, there were two walks and singles by Kinlicheenie, Ramsey, Huerta and Ty Hancock.
