PINON - The Pinon Unified School District #4 is having their first Navajo rug show featuring the work of traditional Navajo weavers from the Pinon area, including Hard Rock and Black Mesa.

The traditional Navajo rugs were put up for display April 15 and will be on display through May 23 in the Pinon Middle School Library. The public is invited to view the rugs from 3:15 to 5:30 Monday through Thursday. The official opening of the show will be held April 30 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. during parent-teacher conferences.

The show is a combined effort on the part of the Pinon teaching staff, students, and the community. Pinon Middle School video club also took a field trip out to the Herder Ranch to videotape how Lorraine Herder (Black Mesa Weavers Association) raises churro sheep for their exceptional wool and then processes it in the traditional way into the finished rug. The After School Homework Program, which is funded through the 21st Century Program, hung the rugs in the Middle School Library.

The rugs will be sold by the weavers through a bidding process. All monies will go to the individual weavers. Each weaver has placed a base price on their individual rug and visitors to the show are invited and encouraged to submit their bids. The show will end May 23 and the weavers will then be contacting the winning bidders through a buyer contact information form.

The organizers are hopeful that is only the start of a new tradition in Pinon.

Contact Jayne Ottesen at (928) 725-2350 for further information. Rugs will be accepted for display up until the formal opening of the show on April 30.
