Hopi boys, girls beat Rough Rock

ROUGH ROCK - For the second straight night, Hopi High beat Rough Rock by two points in overtime, 77-75, in boys basketball action Jan. 31.

Hopi improved to 11-14 overall and 7-6 in the 2A North division. With the loss, Rough Rock dropped to 12-12 overall and 4-9 in the 2A North division.

Ray Honyaoma fired in 17 points to top Hopi, Xavier "Big X" Kewanyama poured in 13, Paul Quamahongnewa netted a dozen points, Trevor Crook helped out with nine, Jory Qotswisiwama tossed in eight, Roper Crook and Tony Pawesiema pitched in with a half dozen points apiece, Sherwin Wartz finished with five and Jeremy Calnimptewa added three.

Josh Nelson paced Rough Rock with 25 markers, Henry Benally III fired in 17, Wilson Lopez poured in 13, Garrison Yellowman tossed in 11, Dante Elleby pitched in with three and Shawn Davis scored a deuce.

Trevor Crook poured in six points and Wartz added five in the opening period as the Bruins took a 22-15 edge. Benally and Nelson scored five each during the quarter to keep Rough Rock close.

Nelson poured in eight points and Benally added seven as Rough Rock pulled within 41-36 at halftime. Big X netted eight points for Hopi in the second quarter.

Roper Crook and Qotswisiwama netted four points each in the third as Hopi kept a 56-51 edge. Nelson and Lopez countered with four each for Rough Rock during the quarter.

Nelson poured in eight points in the fourth period as Rough Rock tied the game at 67-67 to send it into overtime.

In the overtime period, Qotswisiwama led Hopi with five points, Honyaoma fired in three and Pawesiema added a deuce as Hopi escaped with the victory.

-GIRLS GAME-

Annalese "Nan" Nasafotie poured in 20 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds as the Lady Bruins beat Rough Rock, Jan. 31, in girls high school basketball action.

Hopi High improved to 11-14 overall and 9-4 in the 2A North. Rough Rock dropped to 4-20 overall and are winless in ten conference games.

Nasafotie led the way with her double double, but she had plenty of help. Ivy Honie fired in 14 points and came up with nine steals. Cassandra Nash netted ten points, Samantha Sekaquaptewa chipped in nine points, Evanna James tossed in seven points, Danielle Tom and Junelle Puhuyesva finished with five apiece, Nichole Kisto added four, Tiffany Kisto and Khrystyl Youvella scored two points apiece, and Adrianna "Aila" Preston hit a foul shot.

Natasha Thompson topped Rough Rock with 20 points, Jordan Sherlock netted nine, Micheryl Yazzie scored seven, Wendy Cly finished with four and Monica Berchman netted three.

Honie fired in six points and Nasafotie tossed in four as Hopi led 21-8 after the first period. Nasafotie poured in six and Nash added four as the Lady Bruins led 40-17 at halftime.

Nasafotie netted five and Honie and Nash four each as Hopi led 60-30 after three quarters.

Nasafotie tossed in five and Puhuyesva four as the Lady Bruins coasted to victory in the final period with a final score of 79-43.

Hopi High Coach Ben Willey said the Lady Bruins had a total team effort as all but two players scored.

"We played really well in some areas, but we need to improve in other areas," he said. "We rebounded and played defense really well, but our offense needs to cut down on its turnovers."

He credited Honie and James with leading the defense and Nasafotie and Preston with hauling down the rebounds.
