Safe over summer

Summertime is here! For kids that signals freedom and for parents it signals worry.

National statistics show that in June and July first time users of marijuana will increase 40 percent and each day in those same months, 2,700 children will try a prescription drug to get high for the first time. It's hard to believe, but average age of first drug use in Arizona is 13 years old, said Debe Campbell, coordinator for Navajo County Coalition Against Drug Abuse.

Summertime, more than ever, is the right time to talk with your child about drugs and what they should do if ever approached.

While it may seem like teenagers aren't listening - they are. Kids who learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50 percent less likely to use drugs, yet only one-third report learning about the risks of drugs from their parents. Take advantage of those everyday opportunities to start the conversation because nothing can replace the impact you can have on guiding your children to lead healthy drugfree lives.

Another way to help protect your child is to monitor what they do. Use technology to help you. Text or Instant message your child through the day while you're at work and set regular call in times so that you know they are safe.

Navajo County Coalition Against Drug Abuse is an alliance of The Partnership for a Drug-Free America.

The Partnership's Arizona Chapter was established in 2003 to reduce illicit drug use in America and throughout the state while meeting the unique needs of Arizona communities.

The Partnership is a privately funded, 501(c) 3 organization.

Through its programs, The Partnership inspires and persuades Arizonans to join in a united effort to prevent illicit drug use among teens through community-based education.

The research-based public education campaigns reach parents and children through public service announcements, parent outreach programs, pediatricians, public relations

(news stories, editorials), school-based programs, and educational brochures.
