HOLBROOK-A new era is set to begin at Holbrook Indian School. Janet Claymore-Ross assumed the principal position on July 1. This new era is unique in that Claymore-Ross is the first Native American to become principal in the 60-year history of the Seventh-Day Adventist mission boarding school.

Claymore-Ross, holds a doctorate degree in education and is an experienced educator of 26 years. She earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education and taught for five years while working on her master's degree in elementary education with a minor in American Indian studies.

Claymore-Ross went on to be an elementary principal, a federal programs director, and a curriculum director in three different Native American schools. As a curriculum director, she became well acquainted with multiple ways of teaching and understanding the learning processes of children, especially Native Americans. During this time, she worked on her doctorate in education; in 1996, she graduated with an doctorate in education, superintendent. Since then Claymore-Ross has been a principal in a Native American elementary school, and for the past seven years has been the executive director of a special education cooperative in Madison, S.D., serving 6,500 students.

Claymore-Ross has been blessed with multiple experiences during her years of service in education. Her cherished desire is to help children learn and be successful in school. She believes that good teachers can be successful with any child as long as they remember to respect the child's learning. She would rather be with the students than anywhere else.

Her master's degree provided her with the opportunity to make a difference in children's lives through helping teachers teach better.

Her doctoral degree made a difference in her educational life by exposing the whole picture of education and its complexities.

In all of this she gives God the praise, because she believes He has given her these experiences to assist her in the present position as the new principal for Holbrook Indian School.

Holbrook Indian School is a Seventh-Day Adventist boarding school for grades 1-12. The school first opened its doors in August 1946, and recently celebrated sixty years of service to the Native American and Holbrook communities.
