Renzi announces $7 million for White Mountain Apache housing grant

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Congressman Rick Renzi (AZ-1) announced Aug. 17 that the White Mountain Apache Tribe will be receiving $7,398,059 in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The tribe will receive a Native American Housing Block Grant as authorized by the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA). The funding may be used for a variety of housing activities such as operating assistance, development of affordable housing, housing management for low-income housing, and crime prevention safety.

"I am pleased to announce this multi-million dollar housing grant," said Congressman Renzi. "This grant will provide the White Mountain Apache Tribe with the crucial resources to build needed housing on the reservation."

During the 109th Congress, Congressman Renzi introduced legislation that assisted in stretching existing resources and creates funding flexibility for Native American housing. Congressman Renzi's legislation (HR 797), which was signed into law by President Bush in December of 2005, specifically clarifies the intent of NAHASDA and allows tribes unrestricted access to new funds, even if they still retain income from previous years.
