TUCSON-Sanders-Valley High School student Shantil Scott and Red Mesa High School student Amanda James were two of 48 Arizona teens selected to participate in the 15th Annual MEDCAMP program at the Arizona Health Sciences Center at The University of Arizona this summer. The camp was held July 23-27 at the UA College of Medicine in Tucson.

During this free health-careers camp, students are immersed in an intensive curriculum of study that includes tours, lectures, labs and hands-on activities. They visit University Medical Center's nurseries and operating rooms, learn a new technique for CPR developed by UA researchers, concoct an anti-itch lotion with a UA pharmacist, delve into the secrets of the central nervous system with an anatomist, and get the "911" from a forensic pathologist, trauma nurse, cardiologist and a host of others. Their camp counselors are second-year students from the UA College of Medicine.

On the last day of camp, students shadow health professionals who work in their field of interest and observe what a typical day is like for them. Health professionals include surgeons, neurologists, pharmacists, hospitalists, radiologists, nurses and physical therapists.

MEDCAMP (http://www.opa.medicine.arizona.edu/medcamp/) is open to Arizona high school students who have completed their sophomore year. Students are nominated by their school officials and submit an essay on their career interests. More than 120 students applied for MEDCAMP this year.
