Bulldogs baseball defeat Monument Valley 12 ­ 2

The Winslow Bulldogs enjoyed a productive weekend, defeating Monument Valley 12-2 in a 3A North Region game on Friday and splitting a pair with top-ranked Fountain Hills on Saturday. The results left the 'Dogs with a 13-8-1 record for the season and a perfect 3-0 in the 3A North Region.

Roman Guzman worked the Monument Valley game at Kayenta which was shortened to five innings due to the 'mercy' rule. He allowed two unearned runs on five hits, one walk and two hit batsmen while fanning five.

Winslow took a 4-0 lead in the second inning that increased to 9-0 in the top of the third. Monument Valley got a run back in the bottom of the third, but Winslow scored one if the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth. The single run the Mustangs managed in the bottom of the fifth was not enough to continue the contest.

Jordan Echoles was two for two with a double. Ray Grabowski was one for one with a double. Mario Sells had a home run in two trips to the plate. Joe Monsegur, Randall Hearrell and Kirk Ramsey were all also one for two. Stephen Soehner and Guzman were one for three with Guzman having a double. Steffen Bailon was one for four with a double.

Fountain Hills won the first game of Saturday's double-header in a 14-12 slugfest. Efrim Kinlicheenie and Joe Monsegur worked on the mound for the Bulldogs.

Winslow led 2-0 after the top of the first only to see the Falcons score eight runs in the bottom of the frame on five hits and two errors. The Bulldogs plated five runs in the top of the second to cut the lead to 8-7 and tied the game with a run in the top of the third. The Falcons regained the lead at 11-8 with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs took the lead back with a four-run top of the fifth. The Falcons tied the game at 12-12 in the bottom of the fifth and won it in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs.

Soehner and Victor Martinez were both three for five with triples. Kinlicheenie was two for three. Grabowski was two for four with a double. Hearrell was two for five with a double. Sells was two for fie with a home run and a double. Monsegur was one for three.

The second game was all Winslow as the Bulldogs took a 14-2 victory from the top-ranked Falcons in a contest shortened to five innings due to the 'mercy' rule.

Jordan Echoles went the distance for the win, limiting the Falcons to a pair of unearned runs on just three hits. He walked three and fanned five.

The Bulldogs scored 11 runs in the top of the first and never looked back. A pair of runs in the second and another in the third completed Winslow's scoring. Fountain Hills managed only single runs in the second and fifth innings.

Sells was three for four with a home run. John Gonzales was one for one. Monsegur was two for three with a double. Ramsey was one for two. Soehner was one for three with a double. Hearrell was also one for three.

The Bulldogs are slated to host Blue Ridge in a non-conference game today (April 18) before journeying to Window Rock on Thursday for a 3A North Region game. Regional contests against Ganado and Chinle on Saturday at Vargas Field will conclude the regular season. Games are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. starts.

Winslow will host the 3A North Region Tournament on April 27 and 28.
