Exceptional fall athletes honored at Hopi High

POLACCA-Hopi High School honored its state championship boys cross country team and its other fall sports teams during a Nov. 7 banquet in the school's cafeteria.

The event celebrated the momentous day on Nov. 4 when the Hopi High School boys cross-country team won its 17th straight state championship- a state and national record.

Hopi High School coach Rick Baker presented the following awards to his runners during the banquet: Top Gun Awards: Chad Baker and Matt Lamson; Most

Dedicated: Vonn Secakuku and Andrew Honyaktewa; Scholar Athlete: Jose Acevido; Outstanding Junior Varsity Runner: Brennon Sidney; and Most Dedicated

Junior Varsity Runner: Clayden Torivio.

The other awards given out at the banquet were: girls cross-country: Scholar-Athlete and Most Dedicated: Terisa Josytewa; Most Inspirational: Kiara Pahovama; Coaches Award of Excellence: Daylene Billy; Junior Varsity Scholar-Athlete: Samantha Sekaquaptewa

and Tracy Billy; Junior Varsity Most Dedicated: Clydene Honyouti; Junior Varsity Most Inspirational: Desire Torivio; and Junior Varsity Coaches Award: Tracy Billy.

The banquet also honored the chess team, volleyball team, spiritline and football. Awards were presented to the following players.

Chess: Best Board in Region 1: Cullen Jim-LaRance and Ignacio Susunkewa; Most Improved: Neilan Lomayestewa; and Scholar-Athlete: Matthew Mowa.

Volleyball: Defensive: Rhianna Tootsie; Offensive: Marlieta Burbank; Queen of the Court: Annalese Nasafotie and Ivy Honie; and Scholar Athlete: Kelly Keith.

Junior Varsity: Scholar Athlete: Chantel Benally and Allayna Koruh; Most Dedicated: Percelia Batala; and Most Improved: Quinnel Namingha Freshman: Scholar Athlete: Robin Miguel; Offensive Player: Nicole Cepai; Leftside Hitter: Latoya Rucker; and Most Dedicated Manager: Allison Coochyouma.

Spirtline: Most Innovative: Kamille Kane; Most Dedicated: Melissa Pochoema; Leadership: Jody Timms; and Scholar-Athlete: Jermaine Selina.

Football: Defensive: Michael Lomatewaima; Offensive: Ambrose Sinquah; Bruin Award: Paul Huma; and Scholar Athlete: Kaleigh Robertson.
