TUBA CITY -- The safety of students, staff members and administrators is a top priority for the Tuba City Unified School District's maintenance crew.

Part of the TC District's Maintenance Department's responsibility is to keep the school and work environment safe. As a result, this department is constantly keeping up with the yearly Occupation and Safety Health Organization (OSHA) standards for dangerous situations and how to prevent accidents resulting from chemicals, cleaning solvents and flammable liquids including propane.

On Jan. 31, Cliff Follansbee who is a representative for Drummond America out of Flagstaff spent the entire day in a workshop for TC's maintenance, transportation and media departments updating employees on safety precautions, the line of reporting protocol in the event of an accident and what responsibilities the school district must adhere to for reporting of any dangerous incidents.

Since each chemical introduced within an educational environment, must carry a state required information MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), it is all the more important that the staff members who work with such hazardous materials be aware of any dangers and precautions in using such materials near human contact.

State safety compliancy along with staff awareness help to make Tuba City District a safe educational place for all students and staff members.

For more information about the workshop and educational information on hazardous chemical maintenance and prevention, call the maintenance department at Tuba City District at 928-283-1166 or the Tuba City Office of Public Relations at 928-283-1072.
