Vigil wins state title, wrestlers finish fourth

Winslow High School wrestler Enrique Vigil won the 103 pound division title in the Arizona State 3A Wrestling Championship Tournament held on Friday and Saturday in Glendale. Teammate Anthony Martinez finished second in the 145 pound division. Both championship matches were decided by pins as Vigil pinned Matt Rindal of Fountain Hills and Martinez was pinned by Ryan Legue of Show Low.

Justin Powell finished third in the 215 pound division. David Young was fifth in the 275 pound division and Victor Martinez was sixth in the 152 pound division.

The Bulldogs finished fourth in the team standings behind Safford, Payson; and Show Low. Safford won the team championship with a score of 227.5. Payson was second at 164.5 with Show Low third at 147 and the Bulldogs fourth at 113. Fountain Hills was fifth at 89 followed by Snowflake (82.5), Holbrook (76.5), Sahuarita (69.5), Blue Ridge (61.5), Santa Cruz (60.5), Greyhills (46), Round Valley (45.5), Tuba City (45.5), Chinle (39), Ganado (37.5), Monument Valley (31), Seton Catholic (27), Wickenburg (19), Window Rock (18), River Valley (18), Chino Valley (10), Florence (9), Hopi (7), Sedona, Globe and Empire (0).

Winslow Coach Justin Hartman said on Monday that John Gonzales and Kirk Ramsey had accounted for team points although they did not place and that an injury default to David Bailon had been costly. He said that he was pleased with the team's performance this year and had thought second place was a possibility had thinks worked out right for the team.
