NAU's Native American graduates honored
The Northern Arizona University Commencement ceremonies held Dec. 15 at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome were especially exciting for Native American students who were honored with the gift of a special sash provided by NAU Native American Student Services (NASS). Each of the unique sashes featured a symbol created by NAU Native American staff member Ron Redsteer, as well as the NAU logo. This semester approximately 145 Native American students graduated with both undergraduate and graduate degrees in numerous fields.
In the photo above Selita Mitchell (left, Diné, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education), Miss Indian NAU Memarie Tsosie, and Asa Lavender Jr. (White Mountain Apache, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education) share a moment of celebration. Prior to each ceremony, Tsosie donned the graduates with their sashes.
