Cross-country takes second at tourney

The Winslow High School girls' cross-country team finished second in the Winslow Invitational Cross-country Meet held on Sept. 28. The Winslow boys were not among the top three teams in the meet.

The Ganado girls won the meet with a low total of 54 to 101 for second place Winslow. Alchesay was a close third with a score of 105. In the boys' meet, Ganado was also the victor with a score of 79. Window Rock was second with a score of 145 and Holbrook was third with a score of 151.

Hopi won the junior varsity girls' meet with a low score of 29. Tuba City was second with a score of 83 and Holbrook was third with a score of 107. Monument Valley won the junior varsity boys' meet with a low score of 53. Ganado was second with a score of 69 and Tuba City was only two points behind in third at 71.

Marilyn Curley of Ganado won the girls' individual title with a time of 19:55.39 Janeen Yazzie of Winslow was second with her team's best performance in a time of 20:22.04 Alandria Reid of Ganado was third. Ganado had four more runners in the top 20 finishers.

Julian Begay of Many Farms won the boys' individual title with a time of 17:11. 97. Winslow had two runners finish in the top 20. Wilbert Barton was sixth with a time of 17:52.09 and O'Leary Yazzie was 17th with a time of 18:30.37.

The only Winslow junior varsity runner who placed in the top 15 in either race was Cedric Yazzie who placed ninth in the boys' event.
