The Winslow High School golf team competed in the Arizona State 3A Conference Meet at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott on May 8 and 9.
Winslow finished twelfth with a score of 755. Snowflake won the meet with a score of 641, edging out Wickenburg by a single stroke. Higley was fourth with a score of 646 and Seton Catholic finished fifth at 650.
WHS Coach Ted Pate said after the tournament that he was very proud of his players. He noted that many other coaches and golf professionals had expressed surprise that Winslow was able to field a team that could break 50 (nine holes) or 100 (18 holes) without having a course to practice upon regularly.
Pate noted that only one player (Tommy Hancock) will graduate and not return for the 2006 season.
He said that with continued commitment and practice in the summer, the team should be even more competitive next season.
Winslow scores in the tournament included Jeffery Wetherbee 93-90 (183), Anthony Meritt 97-79 (186), Tommy Hancock 93-96 (189), Kendrick Chee 98-99 (197) and Vernon Rogers 114-100 (214).
The medalist for the state tournament was Charley Renfro of River Valley who turned in an excellent two round score of 68-74 (144).
