POLACCA — Pinon used balanced offense and defense to beat Hopi 11-1 in the opening round of the 3A North high school boys’ baseball tournament April 26.
Pinon improved to 6-7 overall. Pinon finished the regular conference season with a 1-6 record.
Pinon Coach Butch Curns said this was a big win for Pinon and much different than the earlier season game when Pinon lost to Hopi.
“The difference was that today we were hitting all up and down the lineup. The last time we played Hopi we were just hitting at the bottom end of the lineup,” he said.
Curns added that all of the Eagles contributed this time because they played solid defense.
“There were too many times this season that we tried to catch the ball with one hand and it would pop out. But today we played the way we’re capable of playing,” he said.
Gee pitched a masterpiece as he allowed six hits, struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter.
Curns said catcher Dominic Harding and second baseman Jerry Chavez led the defense, but he was quick to add that it was good solid team effort defensively.
“We played up to our potential. Our errors were few and far between,” he said.
Harding led the hitting brigade as he had four hits including a pair of doubles. Catcher Brandon Benally and Lionel Begay had two hits apiece. Asa Belingachee, Duane Jumbo and Begay had a double each.
