Lady Bulldogs loaded with talent

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs softball team was slated to play the Holbrook Roadrunners in Winslow on Tuesday and will participate in the Safford Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Coach Becky Barris will begin the season with 18 players on the varsity roster. She greeted a record number of players when try outs began and said that the junior varsity team is carrying some 25 girls.

She expressed the hope that the school would be able to field a freshman team in 2006 as the interest in softball in Winslow has grown considerably in recent years.

Among the players she lists as probable major contributors are seniors Anna Pacheco (catcher/outfielder), Sarah Ragnoli (shortstop), Amanda Wilcox (third base), Tessa Ramsey (centerfield) and Tahmie Smith (pitcher); junior Brianna Conatser (first base/pitcher); sophomores Kaylee Salazar (first base/outfielder), Quintina Begay (second base), Shaleen Miller (catcher) and Alex Magana (second base/outfielder) and freshman Christina Rogers (outfielder).

Others on the squad include Devin Parsons, Melissa Robertson, Alicia Flores, Monika LeGate, Elizabeth McWaters, Frances Lewis and Jennifer Estudillo.

After the Safford Tournament, Winslow will play at Round Valley on March 8 and at Snowflake on March 10. The next scheduled home game is on March 15 against Chino Valley.

The Lady Bulldogs will host the Bojo’s/3C’s Invitational Tournament on March 18 and 19. This will be the second year for the tournament which drew an impressive number of outstanding teams last season.
