Fire Truck Tug returns in August

Last year, the first Fire Truck Tug raised about $4,000 for Arizona Special Olympics. Statewide, Arizona fire and police officers raised about $250,000 and were able to send 10 children to Athens for the Olympic Games.

This year, Cpl. Chuck Hodge of the Winslow Police Department expects a bigger turnout and hopes to raise more than double the money.

Hodge is looking for more teams to sign up for the truck pull and volunteers to work the event, which is scheduled for Aug. 13. The starting time for this year's event depends on how many teams sign up to pull the fire truck.

Teams will compete in men's, women's and co-ed divisions to tug a 16-ton fire truck 35-feet. The fastest three teams in each division receive awards. Everyone who participates receives a T-shirt. Last year's teams took 10-15 seconds to cross the finish line.

Registration is $150 per team.

This year's event will include many of the same crowd-favorite games from last year as well as food and a raffle and silent auction. Prizes include autographed sports memorabilia from the Cardinals and Diamondbacks, weekend getaways, meals, tools, bicycles and other donated items.

Hodge said the City Pool might be open again this year for a free swim. Pope Avenue will be closed from Maple to Cherry during the event.
