Charitable work begins early at Tuba City Jr. High School
Students raise $1,400 for local No Kill Shelter

TUBA CITY — For several years in a row, Tuba City Junior High has had a program called Character Counts.

It’s designed to teach students that not only quality classroom work is extremely important but that one should contribute and participate in charitable works within one’s home community, to give unselfishly for the good the community.

Tuba City Junior High’s Mustang Team raised $1,400 this year to donate to the Tuba City Humane Society No Kill Shelter, which is operated by Mary Jo Parys along with several other adult members in the community.

This shelter is operated solely on donated funds, with volunteers spending countless hours caring and finding homes for the abandoned and abused animals.

Another service the No Kill Shelter provides is extended nursing care for hurt or injured animals who need additional care before they can be adopted.

Students who participated in the Character Counts/No Kill Shelter fund-raising effort are: Roy Koehmstedt, Bridget Yazzie, Kyle Nez, Oskar Barlow, Phylicia Preston, Meagan Pete, Tyesha Ignacio, Charnell Watson, Ariana Nez, Marilena Dallas and Jordan Whiterock.

For more information about the No Kill Shelter call Mary Jo Parys at 928-283-2501 or call Delma Glasgow at the Tuba City Junior High School at 928-283-1055.
