Roadway construction delays expected on US 160 in northern Arizona through the summer

TUBA CITY -- Travelers in northern Arizona will experience roadway construction delays on US Highway 160 throughout the summer beginning July 5, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The approaches to Begashibito (Cow Springs) Wash Bridge at milepost (MP) 349 will be rebuilt to provide greater stability. Only one lane will be open 24-hours per day across the bridge and flaggers and law enforcement will be on site to direct traffic throughout July.

Additionally, workers will lay the final layer of asphalt on US160 between Tonalea, Red Lake and Cow Springs, from MP 341 to MP 358. During paving, crews will stop traffic to facilitate operations within the project areas, and pilot vehicles will escort motorists one-way through the construction zone. Motorists should expect delays up to 20 minutes.

Additionally, speed limits will be reduced to 35 mph, and motorists must obey all posted restrictions throughout the project areas. Traffic signs will provide details, and flaggers and law enforcement officers will assist with traffic movement and compliance with posted restrictions.

Roadway improvements to US 160 in northern Arizona include installing passing lanes, resurfacing the highway and turnouts with rubberized asphalt (which will provide a smoother ride to motorists), and providing other roadway improvements. Work is continuing from last year and is anticipated to be complete in September. Paving hours are from approximately 6 a.m.-7 p.m. daily, and may include weekend work.
