County Fair to offer more entertainment, events

Anticipation is building around the county as word gets out that the Navajo County Fair will offer more events and entertainment to its visitors this year. The event will be held Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 14-17, at the county fairgrounds in Holbrook.

Parks and Recreation Director and Fairgrounds Manager Sam Pogue noted that the county fair and Holbrook's annual Old West Days will run concurrently.

"We are sharing efforts to complement both venues, and to combine areas for visitors' convenience," noted Pogue.

Old West Days will be held Sept. 16 and 17.

The county fair will officially start with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening, followed by the Miss Navajo County Junior Miss Pageant.

Fireworks are planned as part of the annual Demolition Derby on Thursday evening. A car show will be staged along Arizona Street from the historic courthouse to the fairgrounds, bringing the two venues together. In addition, old-fashioned public transportation between the two locations is being planned.

Rodeo shows will be held at 7 o'clock on Friday evening in the fairgrounds arena, and at 6 p.m. on Saturday, with a western dance to follow. Special entertainment at the rodeos will be Roman Bull riding. Rodeo admission will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years.

The Old West Celebration plans are still being firmed up by the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce. The two-day event will include an arts and crafts fair on the lawn of the historic courthouse, an art show, kids' games, Old West re-enactors, the Bucket of Blood Races and entertainment.

The chamber board and fair board will schedule entertainment and other events to allow visitors to take in all that is being offered through the two entities.

Frasier Carnivals will be set up at the fairgrounds, and a petting zoo and magicians are planned.

The annual Junior Livestock Auction will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, and is expected to feature an increase in the number of 4-H and FFA market animals to be sold.

The annual Little Buckaroo Rodeo will take place at 12 noon on Saturday.

The 2005 fair premium book will be distributed through the newspaper. Two days will be scheduled to bring in items for the fair open class exhibits, with non-perishables to be brought in earlier. More ribbons and prizes from corporate sponsors will be awarded this year.

General admission for the county fair will be $3 for adults and $2 for children under 12.

Improvements to the fairgrounds this season include a new announcer stand in the arena and new restroom facilities at the north end adjacent to the 4-H stalls.
