MV Lady Mustangs rack up state wrestling titles <br>

The Lady Mustang Wrestling Team had an outstanding performance at the Girls State Championships held Feb. 19 at Deer Valley Middle School. Natasha Nez, Celeste Thomas, and Debe Brady were Arizona State Wrestling Champions.

Other top finishers include: Frances Barlow and Sandy Speck second place, Jonette Tso and Nikkateeshia Begay earned fourth place. There were more than 100 female competitors making Arizona only the third state to achieve this feat.

“Congratulate these females on their top performances,” said Andrew D. Jones, Monument Valley wrestling coach. “The North Region was well represented as Window Rock and Tuba City had State Champs.”

First place finishers Yolanda White and Stacy Walters represented Kayenta Middle School. Jerlitta Etsitty took second place and Leslie Bahe took fourth place.

Charmayne Etsitty earned a first place and Tracy Walters earned a second. They are both from Kayenta, but participated unattached to the school.

Boys at state

The Mustangs had four match winners at the State Tournament, held Feb. 11 and 12 at Glendale Arena in Phoenix.

Myron Brady and Herschel Blackwater won matches at the Tournament. Ryan Salt placed sixth at 130 pounds as did Nathan Atene at 189 pounds. Atene avenged two earlier season losses to earn a state place.

“The team will look to build on this success for next season,” Jones said.
