Head Start sign-up set

New school dedication

Leupp Public School is pleased to announce the open house and dedication of its new school. This celebration will take place at Leupp Public School in Leupp, on June 8, starting at 9 a.m. (MST). The celebration includes blessing by Steve Darden and performaces by the Navajo Ribbon Dancers and Hopi Dancers. Lunch will be served to everyone. Small biz development

Native Americans for Community Action’s Economic Development Program will be conducting a series of small business development classes in Flagstaff at no charge. Lee Vadnais with Coconino County Community College will be teaching this six week, two hour per session course. Church meeting

The Azee Bee Nahagha of the Dine’ Nation formerly known as Native American Church of Navajo Land will be holding a fourth quarter general meeting on Saturday, June 12 at the Shonto School Campus. The meeting will start at 9 a.m. (DLT) with lunch at noon. All chapter officers, board of directors, committee members, members and former NAC members are invited to attend. It is open to the public. Please bring your chair.

Song and dance

Lil’ Miss T-bird 2003-04 Benefit Song and Dance will be Saturday, June 5 at St. Jude Parish Hall in Tuba City. Registration is 9 a.m. (DST) and grand entry will be 11 a.m. (DST). The host group is To’Nanees’Dizi Swing Echoes. Any donations are greatly appreciated. There will be a cakewalk, best dress, door prizes, Musical Chair and more.

Co-ed b-ball tourney

The Future Stars Co-ed Basketball Tournament will be held June 11-13 in Tolani Lake. This is an open co-ed basketball tournament with three divisions and 6 teams per division. Free rabies clinics

Free Rabies vaccine clinic are scheduled for healthy cats and dogs. All pets must be 3 months or older. They will be held: June 2, at Pinon Chapter from 3p.m. to 6p.m.; June 3, at Black Mesa Chapter from 10a.m. to 1p.m.; June 8, at Nazlini Chapter from 10a.m. to 1p.m.; June 9 at Cottonwood Chapter from 10a.m. to 1p.m.; and June 19 at Whippoorwill Chapter from 10a.m. to 1p.m. For more information, contact Many Farms Office of Environmental Health at 928-781-3816.

Rabies clinic

The Coconino County Health Department will sponsor a Rabies Clinic on Saturday, June 5 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The clinic will be located at the Highlands Fire Department, 568 Kona Trail in Kachina Village. The public is invited and encouraged to have their pets vaccinated. Local veterinarians will volunteer their services for the day and charge only $6 for the rabies vaccine. The clinic may also offer other pet vaccines. Dog licenses and spay/neuter vouchers ($30 value) will also be available at the clinic. Art show in Flag

Visit the Aliens Have Landed art show at Brandy’s Restaurant and Bakery at 1500 E Cedar Ave in Flagstaff. This artist’s Coalition of Flagstaff art show features aliens in the way artist see them. It includes alien-inspired paintings, photography, mixed media and more. The free Aliens have Landed art party will be 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, June 13. Tourism biz sessions

Tourism business owners are invited to attend peer roundtable sessions on “Steps to getting financing for your business on Native American lands.” The Dine’ Tourism Corridor Peer Roundtables are scheduled for June 7 at 10:30 a.m. (DST) at Tuba City Hagan Restaurant and June 8 at 10 a.m. at the Kayenta Township office. Tonalea Chapter

Tonalea Chapter will hold a planning session on June 4 at 5 p.m. The Tonalea Chapter is also having a regular chapter meeting on June 19 at 10 a.m.

Open burning ban

Beginning May 26, Coconino County imposed a ban on open burning on its public and private lands in the unincorporated areas. The ban will remain in effect until drought and fire danger conditions subside. It prohibits all open fires, campfires, fireworks and other pyrotechnic displays in the county until the fire danger subsides. Excepted from the ban are lands under fire jurisdiction on federal agencies. Other exceptions include petroleum-fueled stoves or lanterns or enclosed charcoal barbeque grills operated in residential yards. Sheep is Life

Several Sheep is Life Workshops will be held Monday through Friday, June 21-25 at Diné College, Tsaile. Pre-register by Saturday, June 5 via e-mail or fax and send a check by mail, or mail the registration (http://www.navajolifeway.org/) and check to arrive by June 6. On-site registrations are accepted based on space available in the workshop on the day of the workshops or early registration on June 20 at Dine College Sheep Is Life Shade House, in the middle of the campus. There are a limited number of fee-reductions available for traditional and indigenous weavers. Also a limited number of reduced tuition scholarships are available for Navajo artists.
