8 Greyhills wrestlers head to state

FORT DEFIANCE — The Greyhills Academy High School Wrestling Team took to the mats at the Regional Tournament at Window Rock High School last weekend and qualified eight wrestlers for the State Tournament in Phoenix on Feb. 13-14.

Qualifying for the State Tournament at the Regionals were the Fightin’ Knights Jarell Lane, 119 pounds, third Place; Rudy Charlie, 125 pounds, Champion; Lewis Hascon, 130 pounds, fourth Place; Derek Sullivan, 145 pounds, fourth Place; Fuman Nez, 152 pounds, third Place; Cordell McCabe, 160 pounds, second Place; Skylan Fowler, 171 pounds, third Place; and Joe Dayzie, 189 pounds, fourth Place.

“We did pretty well in the Regionals considering that we had three wrestlers missed the tournament due to the cold and flu,” said Head Coach Charlie Dandy. “In fact, a couple of our wrestlers went ahead and wrestled even though they were weak from being sick earlier in the week, and they still qualified for State. If they weren’t down with the flu, they would’ve finished higher, but overall, I’m very pleased with the team and how they performed all season even though we were pretty young and inexperienced.”

Joe Dayzie said that he was sick earlier in the week and did not work out for four days, but decided to go to the Regional tournament anyway. He placed fourth in the 189-pound bracket.

“I’m glad with where I finished,” Dayzie said after the tournament. “I was out of shape and pretty tired out there. I just tried to use my strength and end the match quickly, but I didn’t have much left for the last match.”
